I would like to know if with the canon mounts I can set lens settings on the right camera and have the left camera follow, or in other words be a slave to the settings ?

Just how mature are the Red cameras as far as 3D anyway ? I can't find any information. I am also looking at possibly commanding the cameras over the network ports.

In an ideal setup, I would only use one LCD, and the slave would just use the settings from the master. How close are we to that functionality?

Thanks

Well, they're "mature" enough to shoot S3D features like The Hobbit on them. I spent three months on a $30 million stereo 3D movie with eight Epic bodies and the only problem we had was with a fan after a day in an extremely dusty environment.
What level of "maturity" are you looking for?

OK, other than the L/R lens canon master-slave on focus and f-stop ,

1) Can I change camera settings on the master camera, and have the slave follow for ISO,shutter, image size, compression settings and other usually adjusted settings ?

2) Can I leave the LCD completely off the slave camera, and assume that it will follow with the above settings?

3) Is there technical documentation on recommended interconnect sync cables and other non-optical concerns ?

Those are the things that pop into my mind at the moment.

Hi Les,
In answer to your questions...
1) Yes, with the GigE sync cable all major settings will be duplicated between cameras. You can set the cameras up in master/slave or master/master mode. The latter ensures that changes to either camera are duplicated to the other.
2) You could do, but I wouldn't personally. There are already enough risks associated wih shooting 3D (due to the increased complexity of the camera systems) and I would not recommend shooting 'blind' in one eye! Besides, you'll need the LCD for battery monitoring, SSD formatting etc.
3) Just the manual and lots of posts on RedUser! Worth looking through Deanan's posts in particular.

Good luck!

Yes the paired focus mode for 3D use is a great question. Could Jarred maybe give us some info on when this feature would be available?
This feature would be terrific, especially if the ProRedmote comes out soon to give real focus pulling on such a setup.

Thanks Campbell,
That's great! Can't wait to try on the two Scarlets I have on order.

Yes, that is true. That is why I am also interested in the Ethernet control protocol as well. Maybe that let you send a 'focus to' integer to the camera.
This is why I choose Red, they are more likely to have features I would like to use.
For a wide lens, say 10mm, the focus is so deep that it may be ok without a matching LUT.

Paired focus with Canon lenses would require calibrating each lens, and storing some sort of lookup table to correct for the variation between lenses.

We did dual canon 3D rigs / shoots etc and I can say that 2 canon lenses are behaving very similar. So with a bit of luck you would get the same focus etc if same setting could be applied to both lenses at the same time. So then shooting 3D would be quite easy since no focus or iris motors needs to be synced / calibrated or even applied, just using the internal lens motors...

Also did anybody managed to get the sync function between two cameras without using an external sync generator? It is mentioned in the manual that this feature should be implemented, but it does not seem active yet in the menus. That would really make the 3D rig much simpler not to have to use an AJA box or such. Maybe an alpha build is around with this feature, if anybody is able to comment on this please do so.

Thanks

the RED gods have still not passed down this internal gen-lock feature still. Fingers have been crossed for two years for this haha. And to the best of my knowledge, it's not very high on the list. :-(

I have 2 Scarlets w/ Canon mounts and Canon EF 16-35mm LII lenses, master-slave sunk w/ GigE cable. Iris is slaved, and both cameras auto-focus when master REC button is half-pressed, but, they auto-focus independently.
