  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon EOS C70

David,

It has alot to do with the proper workflow you use for HDR. Like making sure you have a properly calibrated HDR monitor, your HDR color correction and how the HDR image is both tone-mapped and keeping colors in Gamut. This is both for the high Nit HDR grade and for the lower nit HDR and SDR trims.

There are Canon C70 IDT's available now in Resolve 17. I don't know if they showed up in one of the last versions of Resolve 16 or were they first introduced in resolve 17.

These video's remind me of RED Epic/Scarlet MX footage (be careful with underexposure and clipping when shooting, then grade mainly for contrast and saturation) -

Just my opinion, but it seems Canon are getting better image-quality wise, while also bringing along some of the capabilities of their previous camera's.

It doesn't seem as obvious to me as it did back in 2010 which brand has the best balance of pluses and minuses to choose from.

I still think RED have the upper hand in some key areas though. Also, if I look at it in terms of the companies behind the products and how that relates to product development and release cycles etc., I still prefer the RED 'way'. One part of that includes not knowing what the hell they'll come up with next, while remaining fairly sure whatever they do come up with will be driven by the same core aims they've had from the start.

Canon C70 Test Amended

Here is the video I posted earlier with the new clip above added

The C70 is looking pretty nice. I had fun playing with mine. I expect to get the Sony FX6 in within the next week or so, and will be comparing the two in depth.

That's great that you will have both. Looking forward to your comparison. Maybe if you have the time, you could post a few downloadable Raw files, there are so few examples to test online.

Great, I am fairly sure I made the right choice ordering the C70 but in some ways the fx6 makes more sense. But the C70 appears to have a solid 2+ stops more DR than the fx6 plus the shorter body that's better for gimbal, which I'm doing a lot of these days. I'll be curious to hear your thoughts. I'm wondering if it may even beat my Gemini for DR and sensitivity given what some of the tests I've seen are showing...

nteresting that they don't specify certifying Intra vs LongGOP. I guess if they certify HFR which is only available in longGOP then it must be allowed. Not that Netflix certification really has any real meaning for most people.
