  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does the canon mount allow auto focus while recording? I know Canon cameras dont, but wondered..... I searched, but was short on time, so wondering if anyone could answer this question for me :) Thanks again.

Not that you would necessarily want to use it that way. it searches for focus a fair bit.

So it's not seamless? How long does it take the camera to adjust when you change the focal distance from an object?

+1 If someone would be willing to post a sample or a test, it would be greatly appreciated

+1 here too. And even if the technology is weak now, it's always something that can be upgraded by firmware in the future, yes? Reliable AF would be a huge advancement for steadicam in the indie film world.

Ill try and knock up a video tomorrow. Its not awful, but focus pullers neednt worry about their jobs anytime soon. Rack focus works great though once you have the two points plotted.

I believe the camera does focus pulling through trial and error. So the only way you could do follow focus automatically would be for the trial and error to take place in 1/48th of a second in between frames. Might be doable if they could window the focus point and a search area to shoot a little burst in between frames, but sounds unlikely with Scarlet's processing power.

1) Record Frame in Focus. (48th of a second)
2) Shoot 4 frame 1k x 1k burst around focus point ( 1/256 of a second each)
3) weight sharpest two regions.
4) Record Frame in focus. (48th of a second)
5) ...

Not sure if that's even possible for the firmware to do something like that that fast. I doubt it.

If you pre-set the two focus points and do the rack focusing wouldn't that work flawlessly? As in no searching or anything of the sort, just moving between 2 points?

It sounds like touch focusing would obviously mean that it searches but if your racking and setting 2 focus points its just simply jumping between the 2 points you've already set right?

Given it would need to be static objects really I take it

Yeah it's been demoed going from predefine point A to predefined point B but I assume the question is in regards to dynamically following an arbitrary focus while recording.

Thought it was worth pointing out that my experience is obviously not from scarlet but on our EPIC.

Just realised this thread is in the Scarlet subsection. Guess it will be the same system though, more or less.

Im also presuming that the performance of the Al mount is the same as our Ti.

Went with PL today but if I get 5 minutes at wrap ill switch mounts and shoot a few tests.
