  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon Announcement

When will somebody remind these people that MPEG (all versions) were designed to be distribution formats not capture. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot from the very start.

I think you mean Bazooka to a knife fight.

Oh dear, I feel sorry for Canon... They are going to be embarrassed.

Ah, yes.

It's actually pretty sobering - as if Canon can only manage significant innovation more or less by accident. When they finally catch on to what people are doing with the 5D they rumble in with something over priced and underwhelming.

Remember that it is a solution for Today and not Tomorrow and you won't be disappointed.

But the reality is, it's been Tomorrow for the last 4 years. Somebody is throttling back technology just like they do internet speed.

is it really confirmed that it's 8bit? This means by default its dyanmic range is limited to like 10 stops. is this true?

I hope RED swoops in and releases at around $6k... This would kill 3 big birds with one small Scarlet.

Sony - FS100
Sony - F3
Pana - AF100

gone gone and gone if Scarlet comes in at $6k-ish..

jim to jarred: quick! change the prices! we can ask for more than we thought! :D

every four pixels (two green, one red, and one blue) are sampled for each final output pixel

Sounds like Moiré and aliasing to me...

Actually, this isn't a threat to Red, but it s definitely a threat to Alexa. Look at the price for alexa and then at the price of this... seriously.
Now we need to get hold of some footage from it to be able to compare, but it seems to be an Alexa killer. Still, we don't know anything about framerates though.

I'm a bit confused about them talking about their sensor being 4K, from what I understand it's in-camera debayering?

No but if its the same codec as the XF305 then its 8 bit. What might save it if its got S log and 10 bit out of the HDSDI. I dont see any reference to 3Gbit HDSDI so need clarification on that.
