When the Canon Mount was announced there was only the Titanium version. The aluminium version wasn't sure when or if will ever happen.

But now Aluminum Canon mounts are shipping or about to ship with Scarlets, but there is not option for the Epic Owners to buy an aluminium Canon mount. Is there any reason why? Am I missing something?

Red, please make an option for Epic owners to buy the Al version. I don't understand why Epic owners need to pay a premium if they don't need the extra durability of the mount moreover when the Aluminium mount is already shipping.

This situation creates unnecessary situations where people are trying to buy second hand Aluminium mounts from scarlet users.

I thought Red was all about options and I was so happy to see the interchangable mount options they came up with for the Epic/Scarlet. It's amazing that you can change mounts on location in just a minute, but having to pay the premium for a Titanium mount to put lenses that don't weight as much as the cine lenses is tough to swallow specially when the aluminum version is around for Scarlet users.

Sorry to come up so straight forward but it's something that it's been bothering me lately.

This request might be a wee bit premature, since thousands and thousands of people have ordered that mount on a Scarlet, and it looks like approximately 10-12 have gone out the door.

I didn't realize this was the situation. I had been wondering why Scarlets ordered in November were shipping with Canon mounts. Meanwhile Epic Canon mounts ordered on the first day are still backordered. I also would prefer the aluminum version if it meant sooner delivery and cheaper price.

Wait, but didn't the OP say that the Scarlets are now shipping with aluminum Canon mounts? That would mean that Scarlet owners are receiving Al mounts while Epic owners wait for the more complex/expensive Ti mount. Or am I misunderstanding?

That's what I understood originally. I see my post was confusing. I've been waiting for my Canon Ti mount for a while. Like the OP, I would prefer to pay less for the Al version and receive it sooner. I can't imagine there are many people who would feel differently.

I am sure i read Jarred say that the canon al mount is for Scarlet only at this point.

Interesting. Maybe there's some good reason for that, but if there isn't, it sounds like there are several Epic owners who would rather not pay the premium for titanium.

One problem that exists now is ...

For whatever reason, the Canon aluminum mount is in almost non-existant supply.

As a result, PL mount Scarlet orders are being filled while aluminum mount orders sit and wait. The shipping date for that mount package was slated for a week ago today.

The line for Scarlet AL mount packages is now four to five thousand long, and their orders are time stamped in as of today.

If the Canon AL mount is offered as an individual item ... even right now ... who would be the poor Red employee tasked with allocating them out? That will be a fun job.

I for one would still like to get in line for one, even if it takes years to get it.

Interesting.
I read quite a while back that Red was not able to make the aluminum lens mounts strong enough to support a large lens, and that they were not going to offer aluminum mounts at all.
It is possible they were referring to the PL mount, but I seem to recall the statement being in the same context as the Canon mount.

Either Red came up with a way to beef up the aluminum mount or they managed to find a tougher aluminum matrix.

Yes, but that is his whole point....why can't he get an aluminum mount now as an epic owner -- while scarlet owners are getting theirs

Business decision maybe....who knows.

let's not devolve discussions into EPIC versus SCARLET owners - that is stupid.

Jarred said that they expect to be caught up on backorders by February - give them the chance to make it so.

I passed on my Ti Canon mount (good news for whoever was behind me in line) for my EPIC to wait for an Al on a SCARLET.

I've been waiting for a Canon mount on a RED camera since 2008. What's a few more months at this point?

I'm betting that RED will be building Al mounts for EPICs as soon as they possibly can, but now they have to build several thousand SCARLETs, already ordered, before they can start shipping Al mounts to EPIC owners.

Six months from now, I bet they have this all sorted out....but they're clearly getting hammered by the demand.

In the teeth of the worst recession in my lifetime - impressive, RED!

Be patient, and don't start squabbling like a bunch of old ladies.

Oh wait, I am an old lady - ok, but the rest of you.....

Julio - I have needed one since 2008!

when you need one for that long, and no good option is forthcoming, you find other ways...

I understand what you are saying, though.

The system isn't perfect - we have people hoarding back-ordered items, obsessive list-chasing - I'll be happy when it all goes away, and this forum goes back to being informative....
