  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon 7D and Nikon RAW 35mm video camera?

Lots of aliasing in the 720p waves crashing shot. Ouch.

Why does Phil get to have all the fun.... :sifone:

Regarding the h.264 bashing it really doesn't make sense. The 7D codec at 5.5MB should be equal or better than DVCPROHD. Maybe even HDCam. h.264 is a way more advanced codec than these professional codecs. don't drink the kool-aid. This is a very light compression compared to HDV. This is a smarter codec and it has a lot less compression. And even compared to the Canon 5D, the 7D in 1080p24 mode will be atleast 20% less compressed than the 5D! I think that is some pretty good compression. :)

Recode is smarter than uncompressed so you can make the datarate smaller.

What Philip Bloom shoot is always pretty much no camera action. That is the key to make DSLR footage look great.

Shallow DOF looks great doesn't it? It's also essential to getting a reasonable image from these video DSLRS because if something is way out of focus, it can't be aliasing, and you won't see the chroma moire. If it's out of focus, there's no detail to stress out the codec.

But although cool looking, shallow DOF has it's limitations. That's why a variety of sensor sizes is, IMHO, darn useful for the various types of markets you may wish to use a camera in. To think that large sensors and shallow DOF are all things to all people at all times is just not so. And that's why I'll buy a Scarlet 2/3" for all my family. It will suit their needs much better than a vDSLR.

In a sense we're all one big family. You can send mine to my home address.

Sure, and in return you send me a suitably proportioned cheque?

Graeme

At least +10% for the personal service, I'd reckon!

I couldn't agree more, thanks for posting this Dad

To be honest, if people here think shallow DoF defines a professional camera then frankly, they don't know what a professional camera is.

Wait, do you guys get "Employee Pricing" on DSMC?

I think everyone on the forum here with more than... say... oh, I don't know.... about 4,500 posts, should also be eligible for Employee Pricing.:beer::cheers2::ihih::patriot:

I like your creative thinking Tom, but I doubt it will happen. Nice try though.

Well count me in for the Group Buy on the 2/3" Scarlet. Those 120fps - 150fps are exactly what I need!

If sensitivity (ISO) in upcoming Scarlet and Epic-X is going to be the same or even higher than Canon 7D with

Dual “DIGIC 4” processors... then RED Digital Cinema is a winner in high end (professional) and low end (consumer) market.

If this is not the case then RED could continue to exist stronger only at the high-end market just because of its REDCODE RAW

that is much superior than any Canon variant of H264 compression codec.

But anyway we have to see what is going to be in the next few months after IBC.

I think that RED is "suddenly" stronger presented at IBC just to give a right "sign" to the high-end market that they don't have to worry so much

about "winds and storms" that were accelerated from low-end market (consumer video enabled DSLRs, etc,...).

RED is going to show just EPIC-X at IBC, no Scarlet and no any upgraded RED ONE with Mysterium-X.

Hope the people have got a right message from that facts...

Not full frame 35mm above and after all?
