Has anybody heard of using the Canon 50mm f/0.95 “Dream Lens” on a Red Epic/Dragon? I'd like to get hold of one, providing it works, for a scene I plan to shoot in July.

It works, but you'll need to get the RED DSMC Leica-M modified at someplace like Duclos Lenses.

I used to have one of those lenses (pre Red days though) but i would have thought you could use it without mods. It was a screw mount so a small 39 to M adapter but i don't remember anything weird about the rear element? What kind of mod would be needed?

thanks
Paul

Can anyone shed light on exactly how it would work? They did not have screw mount as far as I can see or read online. It is the L bayonet mount. So would it be converted to M mount and then what has to be modified on the DSCM Leica M Mount? I saw an L/M39 screw to EOS adapter: https://fotodioxpro.com/products/m39-eos Has anyone tried that with older Canons L39s ?

Jens, a comment on one of the video's mentions having to shave some metal off the DSMC Leica-M mount's locking ring. It looks like the lens is too big to fit otherwise. So, yeah, the lens itself needs to be converted to Leica-M, then the DSMC Leica-M mount on the camera needs to have some metal taken off its locking ring to allow the lens to fit.

Unless you already have the lens, it would be easier to get the 50mm f 1.0 in ef mount. I doubt the difference between f0.95 and f1.0 is visible and you do not need to butcher a lens or mount. Not sure about coating /flair differences

The vintage 50mm f/0.95 and somewhat vintage 50mm f/1 are fairly different lenses and looks as decades separate them. The 50mm f/1.2 further still as it's a bit more modern.

Also, just to note, the 50mm f/1 is electric focus and can't be serviced at this point via Canon if the guys die on you.

That said, these all have some nice character if you are looking for fast and smooth looks at maximum aperture through stopped down a stop or two.
