Hi

Have red users found that the Canon 24mm L f1.4 version 1 is sharp enough for Epic at 5K ?

Need to get some fast wider glass asap.

Many thanks

The original Canon EF 24mm f1.4L is a great lens, not as good as the Canon EF 35mm f1.4L, but a good lens, it will produce great images on the Epic @5k, but the MKII is a great improvement, and I do mean great, not only on build quality and artifact control, but on the actual sharpness of the images produced, which for a Wide Angle is not an easy task.

Yep. Many Epic folk lurve it. It's pretty good. The version II lens is just a hair better, but really not by much. (at least not enough to get me to sell my version 1)

Oh interesting! you got a good 35mm? I've rented several and they have always been VERY disappointing. I found the 24 L sharp wide open, while the 35 completely soft, across several lenses except for one.

Please tell us the story of what happened Peter! Thanks!

It was a wrap party after a grueling shoot. An inebriated crew crew playing coconut baseball on the beach mistook the lens (and canon dslr) for a coconut. Not a game I would suggest playing while under the influence. The game is played much like american baseball except if the batter hits the coconut and the machete in the coconut it is a single. If you cut the coconut in half it is a home run. One of the crew from Hawaii taught it to us. The canon suffered a most unpleasant demise.

Whenever I use the lens and see the big notch in the end of the barrel I think of this as a kind of testament to the durability of the 24mm lens.

My 24 1.4 mk1 is sharp stopped down a bit but wide open it "blooms" (at least that's what I call it, maybe someone else has a better description) highlights will be the most noticeable, but hey, even the Noctilux does this wide open. Still it's a bit soft at 1.4 but great at 2.8

im curious to see the the new 35 1.4 mk2 that is supposed to be released early 2013. The mk1 is pretty darn good but also a little bloomy wide open as well.

Thanks very much for sharing the story Peter. It is quite incredible tale! I am often impressed by the images you can get from even quite badly damaged lenses. However it seems yours was only cosmetically damaged by the machete.

While shooting Motion instead of stills, on a still lens, is very different and it can easily held different results, the Canon EF 35mm f1.4L has always been better then the 24mm, and all copies, probably about 7 of them in the years, have all proven that the 35mm was always superior to the 24mm.

However the Canon EF 24mm f1.4L II has now proven a very worthy adversary, a great redesign of an already great lens, but on its original MKI never as great as the 35mm and for this the 35mm has not yet seen a MKII edition, its that good.
