Has anyone used the new Canon 24-70L II on the Epic with stepping down the 82mm filters to 77mm? How much does it vignette at 5KHD with 77mm filters at full wide 24mm on the lens (if at all). I don't have the step down ring and 77mm filters to test.

Thanks,

Eric

From my understanding it vignettes on a FF body like the 5D2 (when using step down to 77mm) but I'm wondering if 5KHD is cropped enough to not vignette...

My guess is there's a good chance you are ok. If I remember correctly, 5KHD is approx a 1.3 crop (of a full frame sensor), so even with the step down ring there's a chance all the vignetting is happening OUTSIDE the sensor.

Curious what other people with more hands on experience say...

Hey -Has nothing to do with this post but can somebody please explain how I can post an ad?I have sent 3 emails to Administration with no response-Please PM me-Thanks in advance!

Im going to test out your question today in a music video shoot I have that step down and challenge myself.
I use the Formatt Hotmirrors and enjoy the results.

Phil Holland took the time to show me the advantages and quality they deliver.

I usually use the Tiffen HotMirror IRND combos in 4x5 with the Epic. What are the best 77mm IRND filters for Epic?

I personally use Formatt Hot Mirror/ND Combo filters for my 77mm screw on. They are pretty good, but not as good as the Tiffen.

In terms of the best I've used to date, the Tiffen Hot Mirror IRND are likely the best out there and I use that in 4x5.65.

I've heard decent things about Pancro's IR/ND combo filters, but I haven't had my hands on a set yet.

I'm testing out some IRND one offs and they produce some interesting results that yield an image that can be corrected to color accurate under a variety of conditions and temperatures. I'll write more when I can on these.

Thanks Phil. I too have found the Tiffen HotMirror IRND combos the best for Epic but I don't believe they are available in 77mm and with this stupid telescoping lens 4x5 with a matte box just isn't that practical. I'm going to try to rent a set of the Formatt HotMirror/ND combos for this little job and see how they do. Thanks for the info.

Just to follow up- the 24-70L II with 82mm to 77mm step down ring did not vignette at 5KHD. Incidentally that combo only slightly vignettes on the FF 5DMK2 in video mode. 28mm and you are clear.

In addition, I found the Formatt filters very magenta but useable. Did not extensively test them. Would love to see Tiffen HotMirror IRND in 77mm or 82mm filters size but doubt it will happen. Also, Dragon looks like it will change IRND needs anyway.
