Trying to settup menu for using a external microphone...it is a cheap mic..can not get any sound.new battery as well. any thoughts.

Would help if you gave the make and model of microphone, or a weblink to it.

On the Red One you need to enable Record on each audio input, and set it to Mic level if you are using a microphone directly plugged into the camera.

Also check you are not in Varispeed mode.

Best way to error check... test a mic that is know to work on another / same kind of camera. My guess is that the wiring is not suited for your camera. It's more to it than just a phono plug. The RODE mic's for example you need to open up and cut of the white cable to make it work.

That pause in the middle of your question made me read your post in the voice of William Shatner... I watch too much old Star Trek.

If you mic has batteries then I don't think it'll need phantom power... follow Bjorn's advice and if it works in another device then it's incompatible with your camera for some reason. Mic's are (in general) simple things so I'd suspect the plugs. I believe the Red inputs (epic at least) are mono so if your mic doesn't like getting plugged into a mono port then that would explain it (double check the red docs for your camera, if I want audio I use an external recorder so I've not tried using the Red's inputs myself)

Jim is posting in Red One thread - so the audio inputs are standard mono XLR wiring albeit on non standard connectors!
