  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can we get DSMC2 body upgrades?

A DSMC2.1 body that can accept new lens mounts, maybe brings sensor closer to mount or recesses front walls of body
An ability to swap between all RED sensors or which ever sensors could be swapped.

Or just have multiple sensors in one body

splendid idea "multiple sensors in one body " ideal way so that Red can jack up the price back to 60k and that we get something to complain about ...

I'm sure you'll find something to complain about

Still here to get some clarity on DSMC 2 into DSMC 3 bodys

Is it possible in a physical and technical sense?

I remember reading something about it being cheaper to just buy new offerings, but still looking for a deeper understanding.

I understand RED isn’t offering that, however that is not the question.

why would they, what would be the benefit to them? or even to us? DSMC3 is realy inexpensive compared to what Red used to be. so if you are Rental or working cinematographer its easy to justify Raptor purchase...

BUT: will Red open up the DSMC2 line? will they make new firmware allowing 3 party media? will they let SmallHD use pogo and will we see Cine7 plugging directly single cable... and so on

So as a helium and Monstro owner & working cinematographer, (on top of many warring many other hats) I’m here to say it’s not easily justifiable.

and I’m not implying to bring along all the features of DSMC 3, really more interested in the body’s ability with new accessories on the market and mounting.

but to answer your question, it’s hard to without knowing the limitations on the cost end of things and how that will transfer to the customer,

BUT

to have the ability to use new lens tech

and if/when DSMC 2 (no longer supported yes?) is no longer supported, it would be a beneficial to have it supported under the dsmc 3 umbrella

and speaking from a speculative vantage point, if body upgrades came with the option to purchase an extended warranty, that would also be incredibly beneficial.

honestly, to me, to just push the idea aside and ignore any imaginable benefits, just seems like a subvert tactic to the topic of conversation and then some.

It would be crazy to think working cinematographers in a creative field wouldn’t have the creativity to imagine potential benefits

Yet again, as far as the cost goes to bring that to us, I’m in the dark.

Would love to have an understanding of the limitations rather than a cookie cutter response like “why would you” or “who cares”

this is the complaint department, if I have an issue, I’m pretty sure I’m in the right place to voice it.
if any one is here to think complaints will go silent, you’re in the wrong place.

I'm not RED, but I know enough about the cameras to speak about many reasons that would make a DSMC2 to DSMC3 upgrade very, very difficult.

DSMC to DSMC2 made a lot of sense as the body types and some of the underlaying hardware could be upgraded reasonably. We know that history.

DSMC3 is a literally a whole new camera platform. All new hardware from the ground up, new body form factor, etc. Even RCP has moved onto RCP2 on the software side.

When it comes to optimized systems, it's not exactly as easy as swapping a sensor into a new body. There's hardware tied to the sensor itself in these things.

I suspect the cost of labor, the potential hardware expenses to even make this happen (i.e. new hardware made to retrofit the sensor in there), and other things I can't even think of because I'm not that intimate with the inner workings, you'd be looking at a price tag closer to a new DSMC3 body to even move to the new platform. I do wonder if RED could do it in the $10-$15K range though if people would jump in that way. But there's also very literally a different optical path in the camera as well as the optics themselves, so likely a new OLPF/CSF perhaps. Hard to know.

I will say, yep, the last gen sensors are still phenomenal even in the modern market with new releases from other manufacturers. I'm likely holding onto my Monstros alongside my Raptors for a long while despite Raptor being my current A-Cam for the last year.

I can imagine that the swappable olpf’s would be sacrificed, but I don’t know that for certain, I would also imagine at the same time, there may be mitigation for that. Probably not but possibly so

I wish 10-15k…sign me up,

I wouldnt necessarily be looking for all the bells and whistles of the V Raptor and Komodo, so that makes me wonder about those boards and hardware under the hood. Could there be an in between answer.

The economy as well as supply chain has been trash. The economy and where we could be heading as far as a recession or what not is absolutely something to consider when deciding the route for a second camera. Another reason why V Raptor is not easily justifiable for myself without getting hands on

I do look forward to getting my hands on a Raptor and having my Monstro shoot side by side as I am currently in the market for a second camera (I mean I have two now but do not like mixing helium and Monstro for several reasons) and new audio, which is why I’m here crying.
