  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can we get an uncompressed siglal via HDMI from Scarlett and Epic?

So the question - Did we can get an uncompressed siglal via BlackMagic HDMI card from Scarlett or Epic, like it can be done with Canon HV-20? I mean the signal before camera processors and compressors directly recorded to raid or memory. Maybe someone knows?

The brains should have a HDMI out, so yeah to that - the signal will be processed of course, you can't just put the sensor data to HDMI and expect to get a viable image - it's the same with all cameras.

Anyway, i don't really know why exactly you'd like to do that, the RAW image that gets recorded by the camera is of much better quality than any HD output, uncompressed or not.

Is the Canon HV20's firewire output the same signal as its HDMI output?

Sorry to derail this convo. but I've been using the firewire connection and if the HDMI is better I'd certainly switch over.

If you record to HDV tape, the image will look the same when transfered to the computer via HDMI or FireWire.

However, if you don't record to HDV tape, and instead plug the HDMI into a properly equipped computer for direct recording to the computer, you will bypass the HDV compression (4:2:0/1440/60i wrapper) and end up with significantly superior 4:2:2/1080/24p.

But this is only if recording direct into a computer via HDMI without using tape.

If you try the same with Firewire, it applies the HDV compression, whether you used tape or not. This is why you still end up with HDV compression when recording to something like the Firestore drives.

what's the point? RAW is ALREADY uncompressed and unprocessed. no need to export via HDMI.

Thanks Jaime - I wasn't sure if the HDV compression applied to the firewire connection. I'm not recording to tape, just tapping off the live feed via firewire - sounds like even the live signal would be compressed. It's unfortunate because firewire is free (already in my laptop) - I'll try HDMI but that requires a capture board (and a PC).

thanks again!

RedRAW is not uncompressed, only unprocessed. A decent amount of compression is applied to get the data rate to a manageable volume.

The difference between Red cameras and other cameras (especially in the scarlet's price range) is that on the Red, the worst quality output is the HDSDI/HDMI, the recorded image is much better, while on the other prosumer cameras, the live HDSDI feed out is the best quality image you can get if you record on another device.

So with Red, you have to start thinking a little differently.

well said. i don't understand why people want to HDMI out with their Red?

I can understand why they ask this - cos they use a HV20 to compare to a RED ;p

It's kinda understandable if you look at the price - a 3K camera give you 3K???? Lots of people still couldn't get their head around it. No offends to many people who ask this question, like 3CCD compare to RED or 2/3 VS 4k, 5k, 6k etc. Because many of them never use a REAL CINEMA CAMERA before.

I do see there is use with the HDMI - I can hook it up my 24" TFT for monitoring :)
