  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can orignal REDROCKET Not Transcode Dragon Files? OHHH NOOOOO

Just for you Dave! I had 8 layers that were 50 percent Opacity with dissolves ... no dropped frames. This is in a 6K timeline! Sorry didn't have time to see how many layers it took before dropping frames. But damn, 8 layers is good enough for me!
Then I took one clip and piled 17 cheesy FXs before it dropped a frame!!!!!

Hey guys. I was the first to post info about the RR/RR-X incompatibility/compatibility considerations with Dragon, back in November 2013. I also shared benchmarks for transcodes and playback with GPU-only, RR-X only, and combined GPU+RR-X, as it handles Dragon 6K footage. The results were pretty remarkable:

While I can understand the disappointment regarding original RR compatibility, the GPU performance is a gift and the RR-X speeds are out of this world. New RC combined with new RR-X and/or a GPU like the Titan is a RED workflow game changer. Enjoy.

Is it time to post a kinda convoluted thread about what we know about Dragon?

Marks Blackshading, Phils lenses, what software works, what hardware doesn't?

OLPF/New colorscience.

Like a Dragon 101, where we do not discuss the state of things but more like: This is how it is "now"?

Can anyone from Red confirm whether the GPU debayer SDK has been released for software vendors? I'm thinking Baselight etc

I'm thinking off all the jobs that after many painful years finally got round to online with R3D and that that sussed. Knowing that post here in London moves slower that a Sloth on tranquillisers it's going to throw a major spanner in the works of Dragon uptake if their current hardware / software doesn't work anymore.

No disrespect to the in house / DIY post info here but what really matters is not wheter your latest DIT setup works with Dragon but whether post houses are going to tell Producers to shoot Alexa.......

I kind of agree that we're at a good point for this technology-wise... but actually I wonder if this stuff is not where Reduser is at its best, or at least whether it being here is most in RED's interest. That stuff should be front and centre on red.com, as it most impactfully affects those who are not hardcore RU types ... if that means Red integrating/repurposing some of the excellent work and resources certain users have made, I'm certain those same users would be proud to have involvement and influence.

Agree totally, John ... preaching to the choir on RU is one thing ... taking the message out into the real world of hardworking professional DPs that have to rely on and trust their cameras to deliver the shot day in and day out is another thing.

Maybe, you should moderate a DRAGON 'best practices' page on Red.com ... but keep the fan boys out of it ... that's half the problem with acceptance of DRAGON as a pro camera ... that and the perception that RED is happy to piss all over Hollywood and tell them how to do things "correctly".

Agree that it needs to be on RED com and needs to be factual and brief (maybe with links to more in-depth stuff)
Should not be discussions but more like this is where we are at:

Dragon R3D's now work with XXX
Currently the SDK does not support GPU debayering or original Rocket. Rocket X is supported in XXX
Best blackshading practice is XXX
Dragon has a slightly lareger than S35mm sensor at full rez. Here you can see tests with different lens series coverage
Dragon is not an Epic on stereoids. Please test and see how you want to expose/post Dragon from scratch

Stuff like that.

I'll tell you ripping Dragon footy on my early 2013 Retina is not as bad as I thought with the GPU working. It will even play back 6KHD at 1/4 res in realtime.
I need to update my drivers on the GTX285 in the tower for open CL but I think I can get 75% realtime with just that old card. I'm pretty sure a few Titans would chew it up as good or better than an original RR.

The Titan GPU in my Z820 chews through MX and Dragon footage, no problem. Rocket sits there dead in the water on Dragon clips.

My late 2012 MBP handles Dragon clips just fine at 1/8. Actually does it at 1/4, but it's a bit smoother on the interaction if I'm tweaking looks to work at 1/8. New 8-core Mac Pro trash can w/ D700 GPUs handles Dragon footage quite well. Not super-fast transcode with a RR-X at full ability sort of well, but well enough that for most users it will do them good.

I don't think it has been released yet. :(

Hopefully soon. A good GPU like a GTX 780 or Titan outperforms the original Rocket in RC-X and works with Dragon footage too.

I have a couple Rocket cards for sale… If anyone is interested. I've posted them a couple times, but it seems no one is buying them anymore. :(
