  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can orignal REDROCKET Not Transcode Dragon Files? OHHH NOOOOO

The RED workflow guys told me last week that they just put together a user guide for the RRX, I'd expect it anytime now.

Also, we've been processing Dragon and MX footage with the RRX and it works fine in a 2009 Mac Pro tower. There is plenty of power and the RRX card comes with a 6 pin splitter cable which you plug into your video card and into your RRX. Total power supply on a Mac Pro offers over 900watts. Mine runs at 300watts under full load.

That should make a few of you out there with older Mac Pros feel better.

Another NOTE: my Raid 5 Caldigit HDONE at 320 MB/s seems not fast enough for the Dragon footage anymore. Taking the same R3D file on my desktop SSD Raid 0, 500 + MB/s, allows Full Res playback. if you want Alchemy checked, forget any real time performance at full rez.

Everyone remember that the Rocket-X needs power in a tower or enclosure, I've come across a few peeps not being able to get their cards to work and its just because they haven't given it power. It's not that clearly notated anywhere in the documentation that comes with the rocket-X which is why I'm bringing it up here. I had the same problem initially. :)

The RRX Card is $7k new. You can debayer Dragon footage with GPUs. Worth noting...

OK so I need the new card for Dragon can the Dragon do mx transcodes. Thanks

rED is working on CUDA support but their "old" card doesn't work with an R3d file?

I thought Jarred posted that GPU decoding will outperform the RR on Dragon footage, so they are putting their resources into the GPU decoding. Probably means current state of the art GPUs or upcoming GPUs.

I also imagine that upgrading the GPU "code" is a much faster process than upgrading the code in the RR.

Need to rent a RedRocket X?

Christopher, is that a rhetorical question, a metaphorical question or a real question? ... please reduce semantic ambiguity.

To which you craftily reply ... what do you mean by what do you mean?

Cheers,
Neil

It sounded to me like the Rocket engineers were focusing on getting Rocket-X running smoothly at it's full potential (only 1/3 of it's processing capabilities are currently enabled) and as soon as it was, they would make the original Rocket work w/Dragon. I think it's just a matter of resources.

Lu,

I ran into this same problem last week. Spent 36 hours transcoding about 500GB of Dragon footage without one. Ugh! Lesson learned!

Ah, you got the footage transcoded! Eager to see how the Diamond Bros' Dragon held up.

I do understand that it is a matter of resources. And to some degree I'm sympathetic. But as a practical matter, this renders the RR obsolete. Timing is important. If You have to get work done, and your RR is useless, then you have to buy another solution. Once you buy the other solution, then the RR you've invested in is obsolete. Now, the board is several years old, and perhaps it's time to just say it is incompatible with Dragon and take the heat from post facilities and whoever bought the original RR to be able to better handle Red footage. But in any case, given Red's history of delivery timing, I think we'd all better find alternate solutions. Waiting for Red can be like being trapped in a Beckett play. ;-)

It's also a little frustrating that it's been almost a year since the Dragon upgrade show at NAB and this post issue seems like its just getting people's attention.

RR-X rentals ...

I need one in Palm Spring this weekend.

Can ship one over to you on Friday .. $99 per day plus $8k credit card deposit which will be refunded when you return the card safe and sound ... ours is out on a job at the moment but back in on on Friday ... you can either pick it up from West Hollywood or we can arrange a courier and charge you for that ... get if back to me by 10 am on Monday morning and it's a 2 day rental ... after 10m it becomes 3 day rental.

If you're working with DRAGON footage and you want to transcode it in a hurry you need a RR-X card ... there's no way around that at the moment unless you want to take for ever.

We can also rent you fast SAS storage or Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2 RAIDs ... details on our website:

http://www.lumaforge.com/page4/index.html

Call me tomorrow if you need it for the weekend and we'll work out arrangements.

Let's assume that if all it took to make the original Rocket chew Dragon footage was a modest amount of coding RED would have done so already. If decoding pre-Dragon RED footage on a beefy GPU like a Titan, (or perhaps even multi-GPU support on the horizon) is just straight up a better solution than the original Rocket then that's where I'd put my coders... just sayin'.

IAC, a stable multi-GPU savvy RCX & SDK on the streets before NAB would make the no Dragon on original Rocket a lot easier to accept.

The Red Rocket-X as a fully operational battle station with sorted drivers and immediate shipping wouldn't hurt either - I have no doubt the RedTeam is banging on that one hard.

To me, the original Red Rocket was always a kludge - essentially a placeholder until workstation hardware no longer needed help. While its cold comfort to BigLu and others caught trying to do quick turnaround transcodes of Dragon footage in January 2014, by the end of this year I expect the landscape of RED post will have evolved a whole generation. With the possible exception of AVID, who seems to have gone rather "Rip Van Winkle" the last few years, every other vendor in the space will have native R3D support at some level.

Native workflows with 1/2 res monitoring and 12 to 36 fps transcodes (varies on source material and actual compute power) on decent late model workstations with dual graphics boards is imminent. For anyone with significant R3D source material to handle and/or UHD/4K playback without dropping frames as a goal - the RR-X should offer better than real time transcodes and a responsive native workflow option.

It will be interesting to see the manner in which both editing and finishing tools handle multi-format projects during operations. What's the best way to get smooth playback at 1080+ with a timeline that mixes Dragon, ProRes, AVC, etc? Will the software build a common format review version on the fly as playback source or do "look ahead" pre-processing to cache? I wonder if FCP-X will be able to use the onboard flash memory in the nMP and other Mac models as a buffer cache that mimics RAM preview in AE? Some well known finishing tools convert everything to a "common" format like 10bit log DPX in essentially a "pre-processing" step to facilitate compositing and other FX work in the tool. As the technology evolves, we may need to re-assess the metrics of the "most efficient workflow" equation.

Hey Mike,

Yeah it was a long trip but it got done. I think Pouya picked up the drive today. Thanks again! It was great working with you guys!

I feel this section of the workflow requires innovation. The same amount that went into the camera itself.

I mean something more than just a pcie card. Something that is a portable production tool that goes along with the camera anywhere.

Thats the the next challenge. I've expressed my ideas on this in another thread.

I'll tell you ripping Dragon footy on my early 2013 Retina is not as bad as I thought with the GPU working. It will even play back 6KHD at 1/4 res in realtime.
I need to update my drivers on the GTX285 in the tower for open CL but I think I can get 75% realtime with just that old card. I'm pretty sure a few Titans would chew it up as good or better than an original RR.

What happens if you are already using your GPUs for say Resolve, or any other OpenCL / Cuda app? Does that leave you with an underpowered Resolve, or debayering in CPU until the RocketX becomes more available?

So far I have no shoot this weekend, so my rocket-x is available...

Shouldn't OS X Mavericks have Open CL drives included?

I just downloaded and installed the CUDA drivers for 10.9. Where do you find Open CL drivers?

https://developer.nvidia.com/opencl

All I found was developer stuff.

It"s great that we can use GPU with RedcineX and I know the classic RR isn't as powerful as the RocketX but it would be great if our RR won't become obsolete.
I have two of those and I know many people here have way more so I guess we all just like to be able to use them with our future Dragon.

Kinda defeats the Jim "Obsolescence Obsolete" mind frame. The computer tech world advances so quickly, I can see the challenge.
