I’ve been asked to provide a camera to feed a live signal of an art installation to a display for 5 days. The camera will be in a fixed position with AC power and does not need to record. The client wants a cinematic look, so we have dismissed GoPro. I think the Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K would be ideal, but I have a Scarlet Mysterium-X sitting idle that could do the job.

Does anyone have any experience using a RED this way? Can it run like that for 5 days reliably?

Please let me know your thoughts.

I have not had my camera run for 5 days but I can't see any reason why not. As long as it has power. Assuming audio isn't an issue you might want to adjust your temperatures and fan level to ensure proper cooling but without recording that should never be an issue either.

You can also tether it to a network through the gigabit ethernet port if you want to get 4K.

Edit: Sorry I was wrong, you can't.

That's really interesting. The REDCINE-X manual says that an Epic Dragon or Scarlet Dragon is required to capture footage via tether. The Scarlet-X does have a GIG-E port, so the question is can RED Tether connect to it?

I can't find many examples of people using RED Tether. I suppose it's not really the main focus of these cameras. But I suddenly find myself in a scenario where it would be ideal.

Can anyone comment on capturing a live 4K feed via GIG-E?

I have a client that does not turn on his red one mx. It´s pretty much constantly on, goes on AC and pushes a live feed to a ref screen. That has been going on for years so I would not worry to much.

*UPDATE*

Can a RED run for 5 days non-stop? The answer is a categorical yes.

Taking reassurance from the above responses we went ahead and mounted the Scarlet on the booth, ran SDI out through a BMD Video Assist and fed HDMI to the client.

The display was a prime location at Art Central in Hong Kong. Due to the high profile of the event we had a complete backup set of every component, but never used it. The Scarlet ran non-stop for 6 days and the client was extremely happy with the result.

Thanks everyone for your input and thank you RED.

I wonder if this type of usage isn't akin to where trade-in REDs end up. Jarred mentioned a big outfit is buying up all the trade-ins.
