  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I ordered one. That said, I still plan to follow the proper connection/disconnection procedure—it needs to be muscle memory!

Does anyone at all have any more information on these SDI protector cables?? Anyone from Red know anything about how or if these cables work? Surprised this topic isn’t getting more attention.
 
To my knowledge this cables have suppressor diodes which protect against over voltage. The problem with SDI are leakage currents. In order to separate the electronics of monitor and camera transformers are used e.g. by Allen Avionics. They are much more pricy than the simple protection cables but they do there job and a widely used in television studios.
 
Arri are probably happy with everyone thinking this is a Red-specific problem, yet they make a protection cable too. I have one, but don't use it all that often as I prefer the shorter lengths, so I'm just careful with the procedure. If I'm working with someone new I dust it off.

I understand the frustration as we have an expectation of technology complimenting our lives and not complexing them.

There are options that exist that are supposed to protect the ports.
Would be nice if we can see a demo of just how well this works but in theory they are designed to help.

RED published in writing and in a video demo the proper procedure to avoid blowing out the SDI port.

The problem is not specific to RED or Komodo as other manufacturers have mentioned it regarding their own gear.

In my own humble opinion, the combo of Red Control, Komodo link and a modern iPhone is probably the best combo for monitoring and controlling Komodo given just how flexible and intuitive the Red Control interface is. You can always go wireless though you could have issues with interference from other wireless devices.

The latest iPhone 14 Pro Max use an OLED display and is fairly large at about 6.5".

Yes this can be frustrating but it's not a show stopper.
I write all of this to say that there are options.
Find the solution that you feel most comfortable with and make some magic with the camera.

I Wonder of Raptor XL wich has an HD-SDI for EVF will let their board frie or do they have a protection ?

just fried the Zacuto Kameleon HD-SDI board on the evf but good it has a HDMI input so I could still use my EVF.
