Hi,

anyone having issues with black shading their komodo?
As you can see in the image ive provided, I've correctly calibrated my black shading and indoors its fine.
But when I shoot exteriors I get this blue shade in my blacks. Anyone know a fix to this?

I've checked the white balance and the tint and they're all fine.

thanks
Khurum

Yes I am, but I black shade before putting the mount on. And Ive blacked shaded once having the mount on. I've also just tried with the normal canon mount without the VND filter and still experience the same issue.

Hey Brian,
yes I did check and np CDL or LUTs applied.
I have sent it back to my retailer to fix as they were shocked with the images I showed them.
Just wanted to know if it was something I've missed out on or a faulty unit I got sold, I bought it brand new from CVP.

Looks like a severe case of IR pollution to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but black shading calibration should only affect noise levels, no? How would it add a cool tint in the shadows/blacks?

The Canon Variable ND leans blue at maximum strength. That said, an R3D snapshot is always the best thing to look at when examining footage.

what is IR pollution? I've also black shaded with just the red lens cap on and have had similar issues with shades of blue in the blacks. I did have a look at the snapshot and could see the blue shading in the blacks, especially in the hair.

This looks like IR pollution, I've experienced this with the Canon VND, and other Variable ND's in general. Won't be affected by black shade, as far as I understand it. My recommendation is go with fixed NDs, or check out the Kippertie and their Revolva product. Hope this helps.

IR Pollution is a phenomenon that occurs often at higher ND densities when the filter (or combination of filters) is letting Infrared and often Deep Red portions through. This mostly manifests as a reddish or magenta cast to the shadows.

This however is not IR Pollution in that way. The Variable ND on the Canon Adapter shifts to blue at higher densities and due to that can create a colored cast across the image. Color Casts such as this often require more attention than a mere white balance to remove their impact from the full tonal range of the image. I suspect this is what you are experiencing.

To that point, the solution is to use better filters. This is one of the main reasons I didn't recommend VND solutions for years as the color shift can get to a place that is difficult to fix in post. Not until pretty recently, 2020/2021 recently have we seen VND tech that actually draws very neutral.

thanks for all your feedback. I experienced this also without using a VND. I blacked shaded by using the red camera cap and then used the lens mount that came with the camera with no VND filter and I still got shades of blue and yellow in my characters hair. I have sent this of to repair and hoping this can be fixed soon. I will update the community with what they say.
