We are very happy to see Epson's announcement of a 4K projector that will be shown this month in Japan. Now someone has to tell them to use the RED Reel for their demos! Epson does a great job with projectors and we think this will be great for the industry. 4K all the way, baby!

Someone let us know if they got the message... :-)

I've read a few articles about this but so far no indication of what price range these will fall into. I know they won't be cheap, but wondering if they will fall into the 5 figure or six figure range. I suppose it depends on the implementation, feature set, etc. But exciting news for sure.

And they can send a projector around to my house too, for testing.

Epson has been doing some incredible work in the last couple years with the consumer projector segment, and as far as I know they do not have a line of projectors in the 5 or 6 figure market. It will be very interesting to see the price point they have in mind.

Well, if it comes in at the sub $10K mark that could certainly be yet another piece of the pie that's following RED's lead. I still watch my 27" Sony Trinitron, so I might be in the market for a nice 4K projector at some point. :-)

I will work on that Jim.

That means no more Sony projector for Red, right?

I saw this and I think its fantastic. I think the thing that will push the price up will be whatever computing power it's going to take to up-rez a DVD to 4K. Going from DVD to HD is one thing but taking that all the way up to 4K and make it look good is a great deal of pixel painting.

The if this was just a display issue I believe this could be shipped for much less than the whatever the final price happens to be.

Someone in the RED office needs to at least get those guys to sponsor a banner on this site, I mean this has to be the place Epson could reach the most people in search of 4K monitoring.

Uhh....

The announcement was regarding the development of a 4K LCD panel. While it can certainly be inferred that they will ultimately build a line of projectors that will use those panels, no projector model was announced other than a prototype intended to demonstrate the panel technology at the end of the month. And if one looks at Epson's market, the primary marketing push would likely be towards large format displays such as special venues, multipanel, and large screen corporate needs, not the entertainment industry (although that doesn't mean it couldn't be used for that, of course).

I know this is RedUser, but when a manufacturer announces development of a specific part, and not the product that will use that part, the announcement can sometimes be interpreted as being partially aimed at other manufacturers who might want to use the part in their own products, rather than an imminent product announcement from the manufacturer. Unless someone (Jim, for instance) has actually talked to Epson about a specific projector product, I see nothing in the announcement that indicates that is imminent.

Well.. if you put those to thoughts together, maybe someone else is using the parts? Fairly flimsy pile of cards, but this seems a somewhat atypical Recon post...

Epson could save RED project.

How?

- Because the consumer HD 1080p Video DSLRs with high ISO performance are huge "pressure" to RED1, Epic, Scarlet,...

- Also the professional lower resolution digital acquisition at 3K, 2K and 1080p are all real competition to RED1, Epic, Scarlet,...

Why?

- RED1 is only digital camera that has 4K resolution (about 3.2K after de-bayer process) or Epic 5K acquisition would have a full 4K resolution after de-bayering...

When?

- In the case that EPSON would develop and offer to the market affordable 4K 3LCD projector during next 3-6 months.

- At the next NAB 2010 we could see Epic 4K monitoring on EPSON 4K projector, real-time 4K workflow presentation using RR on many apps with EPSON 4K projection, etc,...

I do think that this panel is aimed at digital cinema, since its native resolution is according to DCI specification. Usually "office" projectors are 4:3, but this panel is the exact DCI spec at 4096x2160...

I keep telling SONY to release sub-10K version of their HD SXRD projectors with 2K DCI spec (2048x1080 instead of 1920x1080). That would be a major hit with posthouses and home studios. I can only imagine what impact would a sub-10K 4K projector had on our industry...
