California fires...

Hi Guys,
Good luck with the fires, get the hell out of there and
let it burn, unlesss you have the right gear and many thousand
gallons of water you won't stop it.
Be smart, don't risk injury or the possibility of being burned.
Be safe, Mezmo

We went through this scenario here a few years ago. Fire all around, and hundreds of homes here went up like a torch. Flames here reached 400 ft in the air. I feel for everyone and hope you all stay safe.

I can only imagine how devastated the wild animals are right now.

Jarred, you rock. My thoughts exactly.

It always puzzles and irritates me that the media relegates such things to a footnote. Do they think that people only care about how many houses burned down? I think they underestimate their audience's intelligence and capacity for empathy.

Fires are a way of life in Australia , the smell reminds me of summer .hope you guys can capture some good 4k footage ,
all the best .

Yeah, I've done a couple of fiery Aussie summers in my home town, Canberra... and one surrounded by bushfire in Sydney.

It is a horribly familiar part of Australian summers.

Jim,

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in California. If there is a way to help please let us know.

Be safe.

David

I know all of us hope for the best, and whish a safe fight for all the Firefigthers dispite already few of them dead, fire is an animal that makes no differences in the lives it takes, we will continue to hope for the best.

My area stand surrounded by fires but for now I only see them behind the mountains.

In the note you write about some of RED employees been evaquated, well Jim, for what little I can help please let any one of them know that my house, it is open to them, just send me a message and I can arrange for eving them over for as long as they need to.

From my heart, I whish the very best to all.

Ciao,

Mr. Rossi, you are amazing. That is very kind of you. I wish everyone in california the safest outcome possible. peace.

Be safe guys. Get out of there safe. I heard today that the winds have died down some.. Hopefully they retire early.

Best wishes to all effected directly by this.

Be safe,

J.

Jim, just curious, when do you guys at Red and over Oakley decide, this is enough, we're evacuating until further notice. Because that picture of the Oakley employees staring at that huge blazing fire across the parking lot concerns me. That looks too damn risky for my blood. Best of luck~

yep its shaping up to be a hot one this year too mate , unfortunately these fires are vital for regeneration

I thought the threat of hurricanes was bad but it's nothing compared to what I see happenning out there. Please stay safe and protect your family and friends. That's what is important. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I just learned a couple hours ago that some friends of mine lost their home to the fire. They had enough time to load up all their important belongings and leave (fortunately). My buddy and a few of his neighbors and supportive friends tried to return and hold off the fire from a few of the houses... Probably would have been a futile effort anyway -- simply not enough resources or man-power to fight this fire and the windy conditions. But it didn't happen, the police escorted them out of the neighborhood.

The impact this has on the environment is massive, the amount of smoke and ash is affecting people thousands of miles away. The wildlife always suffers from fires like this. Larger and quicker animals can usually out-run the flames, assuming they aren't encircled by the fire before they realize it or run the wrong way... But even if they do escape, it often drives them into populated areas, roadways, etc.. Their food supplies are destroyed with the fire, etc..

Here in Colorado, we really dodged the bullet this year. We had a much wetter and more humid summer than normal and very few wildfires. Hardly normal -- I have relatives who lost their home and business to wildfires in southern Colorado in '05.

Like Myktyl, I'm rain-dancing like a madman for you guys.

I grew up in northing California and I know what you dealing with. I remember having to stand on the roof of my house with a hose to make sure it did not catch on fire. Good luck to you and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

My thoughts are with the entire RED family in SC. Please exercise all precaution, and move sooner rather than later. Hopefully insurance will cover most financial losses. In time what is lost can be rebuilt, lives cannot be replaced.

While wildfires are a natural part of the cycle of life in many areas; as with hurricanes, we have to take stock of the increased frequency and severity of these fires.
The evidence of climate change is all around us. It is incumbent on us all to do what we can to reduce our negative impact on our collective life support system.

Digital Cinema as a means of acquisition is an important contribution to this effort, as it is inherently cleaner than the massive amount of toxic chemicals used in the processing of film.
Let us carry this over into other aspects of production (and our lives) and consider how we can reduce energy and material consumption.

These tragic fires are a stark reminder of the urgent need for action, now.

Over 400,000 acres and more than 1,300 homes burned now. An absolute tragedy. More firefighters from here and New Mexico are leaving to help out in California.

That was my thought as well. I always feel the presence of this massive change, with each of these disasters. When I was living in Eastern Cali we had two "Hundred year" floods in two years.

My heart goes out to those who have lost their homes.

Well said, Bro! Couldn't have articulated it better. Just to add to that, Jim and the gang, you're in my prayers. I hope you don't have to make that last minute "we have to evacuate" decision, but if it comes to that, then nothing trumps your safety... not even a couple of RedOnes. As it now stands everything is replaceable down the line, but you guys. Stay safe.

14 years ago i was living on big rock beach in malibu when fire passed by my house within 20 feet. hundreds of homes were lost within 50 feet of my house in that blaze and i learned some important lessons that year.

1. move out of malibu.

2. the fires are step one in a many months/years long process.

fires
rain
flood
land/mudslides
road closures
houses lost to erosion
roads blown out
repeated and prolonged power outages
telephones outages
cable tv outages
roads rebuilt
rejuvenation (it is actually quite beautiful to see completely charred cactus trees sprout new buds and start growing as if nothing ever happened)
rebuilding
new growth
old growth
faded memories
cant happen to us
denial
fire
repeat
repeat
repeat

3. keep your roof wet

4. put up lots of signs thanking the firemen

5. take lots of pictures, because in 10 years you will completely forget and when you pull the pictures out you will be blown away.

6. buy rollerblades, cause it is the only way to get in and out of malibu (or any road closure area - hopefully you know how to skate and are not scared of going down or up step terrain.)

7. keep your drivers license in your pocket at all times because it is the difference between getting through a road block and not.

8. pray.

i sincerely hope no one is hurt from this community and through the extended families of those we are related to, work with or know in any way shape or form.
