Hi
I need some advice from some european redusers. It seems the Red cameras take forever to arrive. I'm a bit bored now and need a camera, and I must admit I really like the Varicam images. I'm in France. The £/€ is super interesting for me now. If I buy a Varicam in UK, can I bring it to France freely? If I paid the price including VAT in a shop, could the customs be annoying with me or is it like any other european country (I paid the vat, i go back to France just fine)? I don't really know the rules between UK and other european countries.
And I cant' find a non-online shop in UK. What are the best pro camera shops in London?
Thanx!

Brexit or not. The UK is still within the EU. If you are in France, you can in the UK without any problem. I don't believe that France has extra taxes for cameras ;-)

If you are in the E.U. you are still subject to VAT tax at the time of purchase. If you purchase in the USA, and hand carry in to the country you are supposed to declare your overseas purchase, but I can tell you that we have many foreign customer that I get the impression are avoiding their local taxes upon returning home.

I have a particular client who finds it's often less expensive to fly to NYC, have a vacation for 2-3 days, and then we ship his purchases to his hotel room and he doesn't pay any U.S. State Taxes either.

Brexit hasn't even taken effect yet, it will probably be around two to four years before Britain has been able to apply all regulations needed, until then, you will be able to handle purchases just as before Brexit.

Thank you guys. The Varicam LT looks tempting at 16500€. It's 21600€ in France right now.

Are you sure the price difference is not the body for 16K and the kit for 21K? That's very close to the way the breakdown is here in the states.

Yes. Body only is 18000€ without VAT, 21600 with VAT.

Yes I did!
This camera is a winner indeed. Still unrecognized. I'm also glad to join back the ranks of Panasonic. I had so much fun with the DVX100.
Here are a few footages in Vlog I found online (3 of them @5000iso): https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B60diOZ-Edi3ZlhuNnZjbnBmOUE

thank you.
i have also searched through the whole web and downloaded every bit of footage and have thrown it into resolve.
i am in love with how easy it is to get a fantastic image in grading.

unfortunately most of the stuff from this camera on vimeo and youtube is graded terribly and looks hideous.
wondering why.

where did you order and how much did you pay in euro?

Hi Ugo,

I was hoping to look at the footage too, but when I tried downloading it, it went away. The folder now says Empty. It seems all the other downloadable footage for this camera is gone from the web.

I've had the same opinion as Christoph...All the footage I've seen on Vimeo looks very noisy and not filmic, yet everyone says this camera looks a lot like the Arri Alexa. I wanted to see the ungraded footage. It also concerns me that the RAW feature was supposed to be included in the July firmware upgrade, but now the RAW has been removed from the upgrade, and it now says "coming soon."

Sorry, here it is (still with the three 5000iso files): https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B60diOZ-Edi3ZlhuNnZjbnBmOUE

I ordered from 3D Broadcast in London. I paid 17290€ (20% VAT included) for the "camera / top handle & control panel / 256BG P2 card / card reader / shipping". In France, the same kit is 23900€. A crazy bargain with the €/£ rate. Cheaper than a Scarlet-W equivalent kit sent to Europe (body / Canon lens mount / Vlock expander / sidekick / top handle / 240GB card / card reader / red armor + some basic ND filters: around 21500€ VAT incl.).

Hi

We own two Varicam 35 and we are very happy with them.
Really natural image and the 5000ISO is a plus. 4k/2k/proxy simultaneous recording is good too.
Just finished a 4 day sizzler for Nickelodeon, and it was a superb experience..
Downside: a little bit heavy

If any specific question about the camera, just shoot.

Hi, I do have a couple of questions.

I see in your signature that you have a few other high end cameras. For this Nickelodeon gig what made you choose the Varicams over the other cameras? And did you had any moire problems with it?

Tnks!

The short answer will be that I was looking forward to use them on the field. All the test made in-house were more than satisfactory, and was time to shoot.
The 5000ISO is a great feature. There was a location on a theater, a piano and just a follow spot. Huge difference between a base 800iso against 5000iso.

I'm a big RED lover, ( my first 2 red ONE were serials #211 and #308 ), but for specific productions, this is the right tool. Just my opinion

No moire problems at all.

Instead of a potato, I give you the following video to watch...

Thanks for the response. Right now I'm shopping for a camera and thinking about the LT or the ScarletW. Each has it pros and cons and I'm just trying to learn more about each system to make the best choice for my needs. What are the clients and DPs saying about the Varicams images that you are hearing? Is it being requested much?

The iso 5000 is indeed one of the stronger pros for the Varicams that I'm seeing and I'm really intrigued by it.

Also tnks for the video.

Cheers

I spent these last 2 weeks comparing the 2. I already sold my scarlet-D a few months ago, waited for my scarlet-W order, and finally got the LT. The pros for the Scarlet (that is just my opinion of course) are the slowmo capabilities and the size (I don't add Raw because, after a few hours playing with the Panasonic, I find the LT to be a delight to play with in post, much much more than my Scarlet, you can push the cursors anywhere, it's still clean, ultra sharp, and the freedom is impressive, you get tons of different looks super easily, it always looks cinematic. And they will add Raw output very soon). The LT pros are the 5000iso feature, crazy DR and colors, really Alexa like, internal ND filters (it makes life so easy), XLRs & SDIs, batteries mounts (I don't have to change my GMP Vmount batteries because of the expander not supporting them or because of the handle), no blackshade (well, you do one when you just get the camera the first time but it last less than 10 seconds), the double P2/SD card for proxies, infrared capabilities out of the box. The price is way better than people think, the scarlet-W is more expensive if you buy the modules that will bring it on par with the LT, and we have the 5 years free warranty in Europe (maybe it's worldwide I don't know). The 5000iso feature can also bring down the cost of lighting. I added to my thinking the fact that so many Red cameras are flooding in (or will). People already killed slowmo by putting it in every video on any shot, it looks now almost homevideo. So I thought it was nice to be limited to 60fps (which is already great) for non cropped slowmo and to get a different look than the huge future crowd of Red. I don't see many cons so far. Maybe the fact to reboot to change the codec if I'm picky, but it's quite fast. And if I'm more picky, there was no power supply in the box, I had to find a Vmount to Anton Bauer adapter, and still need to find a power supply to do the firmware upgrades.
