Hi folks,

So... after LOADS of head scratching, it looks almost certain that I'm going to buy myself a Panasonic GH1 now as a complement/upgrade to my DVX100a+Brevis+Nikon lenses while I'm waiting for Scarlet. But I'm still planning to buy a Scarlet soon after the Scarlet is released. My aim is to buy a set of accessories for my GH1 which will be 100% re-usable on the Scarlet. So the question is, will the following accessories work with the S35 Scarlet??? As far as I can tell, they will... (although one thing I'm not clear on: will the Scarlet be "tied" to one particular rail system (i.e. 15mm versus 19mm)?... Will the Scarlet brain have rail mounts built right onto the brain? The pictures on red.com seem to suggest that the brains wont have the rail mounts built in.)

Matte Box
Redrock MicroMatteBox Deluxe bundle (mounts onto 15mm bars but can be upgraded to fit on 19mm I believe)

Follow Focus
IndieFocus Pro Geared

Support
either a Red Rock Should Mount or an indiRAILSproXVsm. Ideally I want to try before I buy.

Monitor
I'm not going to buy an external monitor because the GH1 doesn't output HDMI during video recording plus RED have stated that they're working on a small, foldable screen for the Scarlet.

Audio
I'm planning to record audio to my existing Edirol R-44 4-track SD recorder. I might try to feed the mixed output from the R-44 into the GH1 via a line-to-mic transformer. I'll probably continue to use my R-44 (at least as a field mixer if not as a separate recorder) when I get the Scarlet because I doubt I'll be able to afford the pro audio input module (at least, not for a little while).

Lenses
I already have a decent set of Nikon lenses (I have a Nikon D50 dSLR and a Nikon mount on my Brevis). I'll probably add a few more lenses as time goes by.

Thoughts?

Don't go small on the monitor or you'll hate life.

Ha! Good point!

One more thing to throw into the mix... I suppose it's possible... just POSSIBLE that I wont buy a Scarlet. Say, for example, Canon comes out with their rumoured XL-H1 replacement with an APS-C sized sensor and say it outperforms the Scarlet in terms of price/performance (unlikely but conceivable)... if I did end up buying an XL camera then most of my kit would still be usable except perhaps the shoulder mount (although the handles on the Red Rock Shoulder mount would still be useful on an XL camera, I assume). The Matte Box, Follow Focus, Handles and 4-track audio recorder would all still be usable with the XL... probably.

What tripod are you going to use for the two? (or three if you include the canon possibility)

I'm thinking about the exact same thing, aka buying the accessories now for my hmc150-redrock rig so then can be reusable with the s35 scarlet I plan on buying as soon as it comes out...
I'm thinking Redrock follow focus with the 18mm rod adapter (guessing the scarlet will still be using 18mm rods), the redrock matte box: can't beat the quality/look for the buck, and a marshall 7" hdmi monitor (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...70P_HDMI_PM_V_LCD70P_HDMI_PM_7_LCD_Field.html) which is in my opinion a ridiculously good deal compared to any other monitoring option... The monitor is only 949$ yet it has HDMI input, uses small batteries (very practical I think), scratch proof screen and it offers very nice and easy calibrating options... And I do agree that you need at least a 7" monitor to pull focus correctly, especially with 5k footage!!!

I'm also wondering... considering I have all that, any thoughts on how much I would need to invest other then the brain to get audio module, CF card module, and power (anything else mandatory?)

Thanks!

Good question. I too have been wondering how much I'll have to pay for a minimum (but working) S35 Scarlet. I think the absolute minimum would be:

  • brain
  • lens mount (included in price of the brain???)
  • REDhandle (includes integrated battery)
  • Recording interface
  • Monitor / EVF

On top of that, a proper "pro" kit would probably need to include:

  • Pro cinema I/O module
  • RED EVF
  • Multiple battery configs and multiple batteries and chargers
  • REDmote

Hmmm... it's starting to sound expensive!!!

You will have a hard time finding accessories for 18mm rods :)

Good point! I've fixed the typo so my posts now talk about "19mm" rods rather than 18mm!!! Thanks loads.

Yes, I think I will go for the Red Rock follow focus.

I'm now starting to think that I should not buy a GH1... at least, not yet. I'm going to try to hire one. I've only got a few small filming jobs lined up for July and I'll be away all August. So hopefully when I get back to London at the end of August, things will be a little clearer in terms of the Scarlet / the Nikon D700 replacement / the Canon APS-C camera.

What about a FF and mattebox for those tiny RED mini primes - any ideas?

I'm by no means certain but I would expect the Red Rock FF and mattebox to work with the mini primes. The miniprimes might need a new lens gear or something in order to work with the FF.

Not sure though. Might be worth dropping the Red Rock folks an email to ask???

I have a feeling that the S35 will be quite expensive...

the lens mount will depend on what you want it to work with...I'm guessing right off the bat it'll work with the RED Primes, so PL mount is with it, then don't you have to buy the other lens mounts?

I've figured my kit to be around the same price as a working RED One...just because everyone around Red USER has said...good glass is good glass...buy it once and it'll last your almost forever...which sounds worth the RED Primes...
