  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Buying Mac Pro today

So does my i7 3960X. And it's not even overclocked since I'm too lazy to put in better cooling. ;)

...Can't wait for dual 8-core Xeon-E5's though. Less than 2 weeks until release!

The poster above who just blew all that money on the giant Mac Pro setup.... Ouch, that made me wince with pain. I had some setups like that and I've been selling them off piece by piece. I'm actually down to one Mac Pro now. Or will be as soon as the buyer of my '10 model picks the system up tomorrow. Keeping my '09 tower as it's still my Resolve station (although really crippled now that I unloaded the Cubix). Will see what Apple drops in the coming weeks/months, hopefully it doesn't take too long. But CPU power and getting work done isn't a huge concern. I'll be building a couple new Xeon PCs and some desktop Ivy Bridge systems later this year when those release. My '09 Mac Pro will be delegated to server duty once I buy a new Mac Pro or two, if Apple comes up with something good. Otherwise I'll have to rethink my plan, probably sell the '09 tower as well. Other than intensive rendering or high-banwidth / disk volume stuff, the iMac I bought the family for christmas runs circles around it. :/

Without over clocking you are getting two streams of 4k clips playing back at 1/2 resolution?

I'm highly considering a Mac Pro upgrade from my ol' 2007 8-core Mac Pro. Kinda hoping for nVidia for the next generation as that would help more than anything for my 3D work. Now is definitely not the time to buy a Mac Pro though, there's just too much potential for this next update with Thunderbolt, SATA 6gbs, and maybe even a case redesign with more PCI-Express slots.

Awww Jeff it's only money ;) If the MAC I just bought doesn't cut it, then I will relegate it to 2nd cart/Color Correction only. And if APPLE comes out with some mind blowing setup later then I'll put it on 1st cart/Editing. The funny(actually not so funny) part is that they shipped my MAC PRO to the wrong address. I live on 97th street, but they shipped it to 9th street, I was out on an all night shoot and was sleeping in the next day when I received the news. So we called UPS and they told us where they shipped it (10 miles across town) so we went there and did a 2 hour long steakout until the person returned home. We parked in the street and waited semi patiently until their return (grocery shopping I guess) Anyway they came back and I went up and got it from them. It was actually quite funny, because I'm actually going for this kinda gritty Jesus the Messiah look, lol. And I walked up and this lady and her daughter kind of freaked out, so I told them that the package they accepted earlier is mine and I would be willing to show my ID to prove it. They willingly handed it over and told me there was no need. It's a good thing my wife was there with me, cause she's pretty, or they might have called the cops.

With my current setup, (sans raid array and 1 red rocket card, still waiting on them) I went to Baton Rouge and filmed a conference all this last week. The first night we rendered 40 to 60 gigs of full 4k footage, (45 clips) into quick time format in 2 hours from RCxP. That would have taken a week on my beefed up PC without a RED ROCKET card.

True that! I had to buy a new car yesterday and that's what I said to myself when I signed the paperwork. haha...

Anyway, I'm totally with you on the Mac. While it is a lot of money on a computer and the current hardware is outdated and all that, it's still a fine system. My '09 Mac Pro is my most used system. Just watched my '10 Mac Pro drive away today too. Sold it first as I could get a bit more for it. Not only that, but I prefer the '09 system for some reason. It's a bit slower, but has always been a bit more stable and has yet to let me down <knock wood>. Of course, I ended up with the '09 tower when my '08 tower melted itself and Apple replaced it via AppleCare.

I have high hopes for a new Mac Pro... I suppose there is a chance that Apple just won't offer one, but that would really surprise me. If Apple does go with the dual Xeon configuration again, then I'm expecting it to have 6 slots this time around instead of 4. Biggest reason why is that the PCIe host controllers are integrated into the CPUs themselves this time around with the new chips coming in about 10 days. 40 lanes of PCIe v3.0 available per CPU. I'm expecting Apple to follow some of the trend I'm seeing with a handful of PC motherboard prototypes -- each CPU hosting 2 X16 and 1 X8 slot for a total of 6 on the logic board. If they can do that and get on the ball with more aggressive GPU support, the new Mac Pro would be rockin!

We should see soon... I'm expecting a new Mac Pro, if there is to be one, to be announced in March or April.

1st new PC system benchmarks:
Geekbench: 28312
Cinebench: 14.25
Processor is over clocked to a whopping 5000 Mhz
I was playing back 1/2 rez 4k .r3d files in realtime in Premiere CS 5.5

The rumor mill in Silicon Vally is that there WILL be another mac pro coming and then the mac pro line will be discontinued. It will have thunderbolt and might use a smaller form factor than the big towers. So I wouldn't hold out for 6 slots.

I'm sure my machine would score much higher if it took into account my RED ROCKET card. And since I only edit RED footage, that's really all that matters in my world. And since I have a 32TB RAID, another RED ROCKET card, another Nvidia quadro card, and possibly a TESLA card coming, I'm sure my scores will increase quite a bit... But then again, that's another 20 or so thousand dollars, on top of the $17,000 I already have invested in this rig. But hey it will all be obsolete in 2 years anyway, all of our systems will be, so that's why I say it's only money. By the end of this year I will have over $100,000 invested in gear, I am all in...

I'm sorry but I'm completely confused now. What the heck are you going to do with the Tesla card, editing RED footage?

Also, why do you have so much money and I don't?

HAHA!I remember seeing his first fight, and thought hey look it's the black B.A. version of me! That dude is B.A. and unfortunately I am not so much. And UFC doesn't pay their fighters much. But my Mutual Funds pay me good, LOL.

He's the UFC Light Heavyweight Champ, that's how!

For that kind of money you could invest in at least a Xeon E7 40 core system. Just saying. Such a system would actually be fast.

By the way, Tesla will never officially work in OS X.
