  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Buy a Scarlet, or BMPC

Am I the only one looking at the BMPCC as a gopro alternative for situations where youre not literally throwing it into harms way? I dont think anyone can claim it is in the same universe as any RED product, but its stopped me picking up any more DSLR gear until we have a bit more info on it.

I'm also pretty sure that a still camera's range is not...
Well, I'm glad you're "pretty sure". I tried to find data that confirms this, but came up with nothing. The BMD 4K (12 stops of DR) Production camera is supposed to have some "light compression" applied to it; we'll see how it fares.

Well Here is RED, and BMCC 2.5k, and a T2i, looks to me that content is more important than the camera, but I think RED does have a unique look that no one has touched yet. I suppose it comes down to how you shoot ,light, post, present, and archive. Many cameras to pick from, all have + & - in the end I suppse you have to go with what is the best financial decision for you and your company.
I still believe in renting though, hope these videos help in terms of what kind of content can be created with talent.

Don't buy the bmpc, It has really bad Fixed pattern noise, you will regret it :banghead:

just in time for the BMCC firmware to actually shoot RAW 4k.

funny, I've seen footage side-by-side of the Red Epic and BMCC 4k ProRes and they do match in the 'Vimeo Video', but what's really funny, is that they both look like shit.

If anyone here has shot still frames in RAW and looked at the quality and beauty, it's really amazing...that's what I see from in Red Video Form.

Any Red Users bought a BMCC 4k? Compared shots on a real lit set?

BM camera costs a lot more to light as you have way less lattitude. That may not show up in finished videos, but it will show up in your shooting schedule and your wallet.

Also showing up in your wallet and schedule is how huge BM 4K RAW files are compared to Red.

Buy BM cameras = penny wise/pound foolish unless you shoot for your own fun and are not paying locations/rentals/staff per hour.

Plus…. It cannot be said enough...

No OLPF on BM cameras = extremely unkind to female actresses. Highlight rolloff is super harsh on BM cameras, making skin look greasy.

Yeah, they had the USRA at Cinegear and the Monitor looked horrible... it's 9" and wow, it was bad.

anytime you add filtration you more than likely are losing light and losing image quality... but you are correct IRNDs or IR blocking filtration should be used.

Reading more about this camera and future firmware updates, it is strange to think that there is this much hype around the camera...reminds me of the GoPros and how someone will say the footage is great and you just wonder if they need glasses.

...for what I've read, there's supposed to huge banding issues, noise and general discoloration. Not sure if this has been fixed.

funny how it's being sold by the DSLRs guys, as a shoot 4k RAW cheaply... I think overall you have cinematographers that are used to the quality of DSLRs and are blown away by the quality of the BlackMagic.

I own both and the BMC footage is cleaner and sharper, but strong highlights or the sun will still produce the infamous purple spot. Both shot at 400 ASA they have the same latitude in
the whites , with the Epic seeing a touch more into the Blacks. Over all however the picture is sharper and the noise finer. I can easily enlarge it to intercut with 5K footage. Also on another note, but not completely investigated, higher speed wide angle lenses below 35mm seem to exhibit increased chromatic aberration with the Red, which I attribute to the OLPF 's
distance to the sensor. A 16mm shot with the BMC was totally clean, same lens on Epic was not so nice. Both cameras at least share some idiotic design choices.
