  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Burning Man !!!!

I have to admit, I'm not bringing my Red out there unless I figure out a good way to keep the dust out. Has anyone considered a waterproof housing? Yuck, I know, but . . .

Yeah, basically an underwater housing or wetbag would be needed, but even then I would not do it.

Burning Man seems tailor-made to destroy a RED.

Maybe there will be a drive-by shooting range this year. Red-only.

ok guys!. so... we are on. I have watched all the documentary and have been talking to many people.

anyone more commited?

I'm sure we will see dome rain/weather solutions soon.

Mike-
I sent a PM. Check it out.
A note about the dust. Chris Burket is making a Raincover as you know (I've seen you there) and I would highly recommend one. I haven't gotten my RED yet, but I have concerns about the cooling fans and a rain cover. It is my hope that Chris will address this issue.
Last year, I went with two HDX-900's and I was very worried about dust. We had dust cover's for both camera's and they worked like a charm. As an added precaution we kept garbage bags in our back pocket and covered the cams when the dust storms rolled in. So tell everyone on your crew to pay attention and warn of dust storms. You can see them coming.
I also had my HVX out there and with it I used a large ziploc bag. Like these...

Clearly, I had to do some cutting and taping, but only once. I also bought a varizoom controller and a spider brace so my operator didn't have to mess with the bag except to remove MiniDV tape. Unfortunately this is not an option for RED.
I assume you already know this trick, but I'll mention it for those who don't. When using a shotgun mic, stretch a non-lubricated condom over it to protect from dust and rain. It will not have an effect on the sound.
Also take water everywhere you go. A camelbak is best.

Haskell are you going on your own or as part of a project? How many people in your group?

I also want to add that it was one of the best paid gigs I've ever had the pleasure of working on. A blast...

(Note: These are not screen shots. They are pics taken by someone else)

Tom, Going on my own with small group of people, would be awesome if you joined our camp. Still not sure what my project plans are this year...I will PM you soon.

Mike let us know what your really looking for, positions to fill etc...perhaps PM me? Very excited for you...1st time is always an unforgettable experience.

Jeff those pics rock, looks like fun!

ok. amazing how time flies... we are on. we have a project together. I am looking for 10 directors to direct 10 stories of life changing experiences from prior Burning Mans.

Jeff? Clay?

We will also film several groups events where people work as a team to complete a task. anyone seen the flashmob stuff?

I am also gonna be working with 10 people who will wear helmet cam style personal cams filming 247...

I am also looking for photographers... Tom? you interested?

the idea is that the people helping with the project will only work half the time

please contact me if you can be part of this. behedge@yahoo.com

For everyone who is going, you should get your tickets in advance, I guess there limiting it to 50,000 people this year or something.

I haven't ever gone, but my friend Kyle has and is setting up a camp this year with all of his friends. I don't know if I am going to go... Do you still need another director to do part of the documentary?!?!

Clay are you guys going to have extra tickets or would i need to decide in advance (soon)? Lol, it's always last minute with me. :)

Hedge, if I'm out there I'd be glad to help out.

Sounds like a good time guys. If I had a second RED, I'd be more willing to bring it into those kind of conditions. The HV20, I'd bring there in a heartbeat. It's lightweight, shoots nice 1080 when there is a lot of light, and if it gets destroyed, it's almost disposable. In fact, having several of those floating around would give you a lot of flexibility.

But it won't be RED, and I'm sure I'd be saying the whole time, "If only I had my RED".

Anyway, can't wait to see what you come up with, and hear some of the stories. I'm sure it will be quite the adventure.

Actually a rented EX1 might be great for burning man!
