  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Burning Man !!!!

awesome Tom. can I put you on my crew list for the project? I'm working out the details of our shoot in the next few days...

chris is building the ideal dust/rain cover I hope to use out there...

Hey Mike...Haskell is still working out his plan, I know for sure I will not bring my RED...I had a great experience with the HV20 and HVX, but more so HV20 so you dont have to worry about off loading to HDD in the dessert conditions.

Tom, I do not have an extra ticket at the moment so I do suggest buying one now in advance online as its the only way to get a ticket...they no longer have tickets at the gate. GET ONE! You can always, ALWAYS sell to someone in your town or craigs list it if you decide not to go...no problem.

Up in the air from me currently is....A. Work with you Mike, still waiting to hear from you off forum. B. Shooting a narrative short. or C. Enjoy my week off with my wife as its suppose to be our vacation.;)

Hit me up.

Cheers

ok. I have bought my ticket. and my dad has bought his. I will have my RED there. We are gathering these life changing experiences... We will also be shooting several group collaborations.

Haskell interested in your short narrative idea. be in touch. I have emailed you. PS are you going with a camp?

I have made a few short films on BM...16mm and DV...shot with an old Aaton LTR (nightmarish changing mags in the dust) and a panasonic MX3000 (perfect for BM)...The key is 1) mobility (the playa is HUGE...miles and miles)...and 2) dust management. I just got my RED...and the first thing i noted was the huge air vents on each side and the constantly running fan...I have NO IDEA how I would keep this thing from HOOVERING dust, clogging and permanently hosing itself on the playa...Also, nice glass is just scary out there...if you rent it, you will be paying large cleaning bills. If its yours, you will be feeling playa-fuzz catch in the mechanics years after your shoot (not to mention pretty much throwing out whatever UV/optical flat you used to protect the prime optic). Glass filters will get thrashed (I used disposable gelatins when necessary). Best situation imaginable: a small tight crew with a clean airtight RV, and at least one BRC approved motorized cam platform. The RED is just heavy enough so that being motorized would be critical. You coiuld also pay a team of sherpas to push you around in a wheelchair. Also, most people are NOT at BM to be filmed. The more inconspicuous your rig, the more likely you can blend and not piss people off (hence my love for the MX3000)...A RED with a decent lens is bazooka sized and you will have no sniper-power. A final note: you will want to be shooting 24x7...stuff happens at every hour thats worth catching...you will not sleep for three or four days. You will need 4 or 5 batteries and will have to be constantly cycling them back to camp (another reason to be motorized or have sherpas). a 10+:1 zoom is also mandatory...no way to handle those distances with primes...which in 35mm pretty much means a huge rig...The light around bond fires and dance camps is marvelous for asa 400 shooting - but it can't hurt to have a DV/HD cam with that consumer low-light night-vision feature so you don;t miss action in the darker spots. In any given hour you will be inside, outside, sandblasted, suncrispied, frozen, hit by a bonfire tornado, run over by an acid taking art car driver, mesmerized by a winged painted naked angel from psychedelphia...well, you get the drift...its about the cheapest way to experience making a film in a seriously exotic, high risk-high reward location...and you will learn tons about how to manage crazy situations on all your future shoots...have fun...

If it were me, I would rent a Sony EX1 and try to protect that sucker! No way I would bring a RED out there. That is just nuts.

I don't think I will make it this year. But who knows!

Great News!!!!

our documentary project has been approved by BM!!!!!!

anyone also gonna be out at BM 2008? We have a pretty large team of people, and a pretty neat project.

Anyone know any filmmaker? or photographer out there?

Now if Chris could finish the dust/rain bag.....
