Building a DIT cart...

I guess copying me almost word for word (from my June 28 2012 post) is a form of flattery, at least you could have mentioned you pulled this from Von Thomas.

Yup' we did joke around;
Here is the link;

It was a joke, check below You forgot to notice "LOL" before I paste not only yours, including mine and others as well. (lol)
Some Real TIPs for all DIT (lol);

Sorry fellas' Now get back to the topic

Thanks again for all the replies. Even though the thread did derail a bit, there is a great deal of information. Definitely not a bad thing.

I noticed a lot of you mentioned live monitoring. This is not something I had previously thought about. Probably not something I'll have in the short run, but definitely wanna learn more about it. What's your setup for this?

Thanks Von!

While I don't know every point in your list, I feel confident knowing a large portion of it. I am constantly learning every time I am on a shoot, and I'm always putting 2 and 2 together and things start making sense.

Thanks for the pictures. That looks really excited! Your cart is pretty sweet, and I've been following your posts for a while.

Is that a BNC going into your cart for a live feed from the camera?

This was from my post.

A cart does not make a DIT!

If you never use a gray card, guess what, you don't know why you should use a gray card, and you sir/madam are not a DIT.

If you cannot read a histogram, you are not a DIT.

If you can't advise on exposure, you are not a DIT.

If your DP does not respect your opinion, you are not a DIT.

If you sit there dragging and dropping to transfer files, you are not a DIT.

If you don't know color theory, you are not a DIT.

If you color on set, yet don't/can't calibrate your own monitor, you are not a DIT.

If you are not the consultant on set for your camera crew, you are not a DIT.

If producers are more excited over your rate than your work, you are not a DIT.

If you do 3 or 4 different jobs (DP, AC, MIXER, GAFFER, oh and DIT), you are not a DIT.

If you took a 3 hour workshop on a DIT cart, you are not a DIT.

If you panic under pressure, you sir, are NOT a DIT

A DIT is a skill set, one acquired over time.

If all this is foreign to you, you are not a DIT.

Not to piss off any more than I have, but a true DIT is a safety net on a production. If you see a problem, you act, or else there could be financial, artistic, and career consequences at stake. It's you and your DP.

While I'm amazed at the incredible man in the flying machine cart/stand concept, I can only wonder how long it would take to set up, to move on set, to be productive. It's an erector set gone wild, but it is something to see.

The cream of the cream of the tools for doing DIT jobs is "On Set Dailes" from Colorfront. The tool is used by LightIron, Modern Video Film, Technicolor, Creative Science and almost every big budget project out there.
Hi Michael & Eric, I am jumping into the DIT/DAM world and have been considering Colorfront Express Dailies and possible renting your Outpost system(Michael). But as I am doing my research, and this thread has been excellent on the evolving nature of the DIT, I have also found Assimilate's Scrtach LAB. Scratch LAB looks like an excellent system for the DIT. How does that compare to Colorfront, especially in terms of background render speeds? I would love to hear you opinion on Scratch LAB.
