  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 4 is almost here....

I never understood whats so hard about the RED menus... The first time I picked up an epic I was able to get around all the menus instantly. Anyway super psyched about this build you guys have been killing it as of late!

Nothing hard about it, as menu systems go it's clean, fast and intuitive.

But damn my old eyes I STILL like real knobs, analogue controls. I want someone - probably not RED - to make an 'Analogue Redmote Lite' - a box with just five good old fashioned BIG knobs on it, marked 'SHUTTER', 'IRIS', 'ISO', 'LEVEL L' and 'LEVEL R'. Either with a marked old-fashioned engraved scale with luminous ink, or maybe a wee backlit LCD above each knob showing you the current setting.

Those are the things I just want to reach out and grab, in the dark, with gloves on, without even having to think.

While we're talking build 4 & features... Here's a serious feature request from me. I've recently been shooting some nature type stuff involving long lenses wide open, with of course pretty thin DoF. The amount of time it takes the system to cycle in to magnified view for focus checking, and cycle out again when you're done, before you can hit record, has cost me *shots*. Quite a few of them. Any way you guys can make this more responsive, preferably pretty much instant? It does kinda feel there's a bit of kludgy code in there....

Has anyone else found this frustrating?

Mike

I thought so as well until I saw a demo of the F55 then I reconsidered... that looks / feels like an old digibeta deck to me... klick a few buttons turn the dial, to scroll menu, click button, scroll etc. Seeing that made me appreciate the simplicity of the touch screen. Or just going trough the menus of the red one feels quite old school as well. The touch, sidehandle and mote in combo beats all other camera interfaces by far if you ask me. The only thing missing is a redmote iphone app. That could replace the redmote for some clients, wich might be why red has not released such thing but I think they would gain from it. As they could charge some for it and higher end users would still want to buy the redmote as it's a dedicated harware.

We where shooting last week with the camera mounted in the ceiling of the studio shooting straight down... It's easy to get used to improvements, Do not know how we would have done it a few years back. As we now could change framerates shutter speeds and such sitting over by the monitor and also have all the other camera info in hand is actually quite amazing.

I use long lenses a lot Mike. Would also appreciate this, and indeed anything that makes it easier to focus with very narrow depths of field at distance!

Mike you're right. I might not find it frustrating but it can get to a point were it gets annoying. You know like the kind of waiting you hate when you get back to a slower computer and have to wait on a seemingly simple rendering task like in Photoshop? Or when it takes forever for a file to load or open up. And it feels as if it doesn't have to be. But what do I know :)

It also might already help if the image display wouldn't show the distorted switching images. That makes it feel as if its crashing or can't handle the task somewhat. With a clean black image or a "loading ball" ;) it might look less distracting. Just my 2 cents.

OK right thank you... SIX big knobs; I want one marked 'frame rate' too... :-)

Hey Mike,

I was speaking with a guy who shoots RED just the other day and the magnification switch time came up as a big issue. I too have lost the decisive moment several times which was aggravated when the talent became distracted as they watched me wave my hands and grimace in frustration.

Another issue that came up and is worth a look would be the fan speed change when the camera gets too hot. Seems that it would be much easier to deal with if the fan just ramped up a few rpm more slowly. A Red support guy told me that , if the camera starts to get close to the trigger temp you can go into the menu and increase the fan speed up a few rpm to avert the rev up. It seems that this same process of bumping up a few rpm could be implemented to occur automatically instead of revving up to full speed.

I suspect these suggestions won't be in build 4 unless they are already in the works but maybe in build 5.

Bill

PS... I like mechanical interfaces as well for the things we use most often and need to change quickly.

It's ready when it's ready, otherwise folks will be back here complaining something isn't right with the new firmware -- I have zero doubt when it's here it will be awesome, and all will be right in the world. We are almost at Christmas - we should give TeamRed a gift, the gift of some patience this time of year -- after all, this is something we are getting at what? For the price of free.

But seriously, happy holidays to all RedUsers. Hope you are all safe and get what you need this holiday.

Best.

it's been five days since Jarred last posted and 11 for Jim...something big must be cooking!

Yeah, Jim and Jarred are in a fortified underground bunker waiting out the last days.

Awww come on. Yeah build 4 is big, but it's not THAT big!

i really hope we can do higher frame rates...i'd settle for short bursts at full fan...if that's not planned can you guys perhaps do it at some point? that'd be so cool...i like overcranks, its like all i shoot on my scarlet

Hopefully we'll get the update tonight before the end of the world so we can at least use it for a bit. hehe
