  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 4 is almost here....

Timelapse mode makes me think that Red has developed a new way to blackshade? Would that be a correct assumption? Are you perhaps using the between black frames somehow?

Ivan

Those lucky 4k+ epic owners!

The black balance is based off of exposure and temperature. But yes, you could have a library of offline calibration settings capable of being imported and immediately applied to the camera or re-stored as the default calibration.

Well isn t your sensor, and there fore your black callibration, varying over time? Library could be a dangerous step for those who needs "dumb menues"...

If it s caméra based and won t change during time, shouldn t it be set and managed by factory and internal SW?

Pat

Ps I ve used an Épic @ Panavision Paris that had such a bad BS it Looked like they Never did one...

Jarred, even though some folks don't like to read them, can we expect an updated manual to be released with this Build?

Jarad,
Can you address the possibility of having a user control for contrast, color, and brightness of the OLED/EVF in the new build? I've always thought this would allow DP's to adjust the EVF to match the on set SDI monitors and alleviate the warm look in low light and raised blacks that the OLED produces. Everyone on set sees the same image and is on the same page. A little user adjustment and everyone's happy.

I like the fact that you don't need that silly Module Adapter to mount the +1 module. Good job RED engineers for finally sorting that shit out.

I thought the +1 Module IS the Module Adapter, but updated to include the extra features.
I might be wrong.

you are correct. to mount the IO module or battery modules you will need either the module adaptor or the module adaptor +1:-)

One improvement that could be done to this or the next build is to have the word RAW come up in the display when raw view is selected instead of just the "OFF " turning yellow as it does now. It's a small thing but it would greatly simplify things.

This would be great to have! Its just a bit to easy to miss that you are currently in RAW mode as it is.

heh heh thanks... it was a mandate.. I hate that stupid ( but necessary ) adapter just as much as you do. Seemed pretty obvious to just start putting stuff inside it, like the +1, to make it a little more "useful "

If you look at the screenshot Jarred posted you will see that the monitor mode and overlay type have been separated. There are only three modes (Clean, Overlay, Menus) that you need to cycle through now. The overlay type (left 3d, right 3d, standard, etc) are a separate setting.

Been wishing for this feature. Thanks a million!

I hope there is power management in V4, would be nice to get more battery life out of the side handle batteries :)

its still a fight.. The engineers make the code more efficient and save some power and then they add more features which takes more power. bit of a see-saw. But build 4 will have things like a functional standby.. and auto shutdown ( not as scary as it sounds ) and a few other things to help the user manage power better. There is finally a power management foundation in Build 4 to grow from.

But thats enough info for now.. lets wait till the beta launches in 2 weeks so you can discover some of the new stuff for yourselves :)

This is huge if it is headed where I hope it is headed. While partially negated since start time is about 10 seconds, it is still a great feature for being in remote locations with limited access to power. That 10 second start up is still a long time in the natural world.

The other thing I've found, is that hiking around with the camera powered on and attached to the sticks and over my shoulder - when the fan is running I can't hear a thing. It's like going elk hunting and listening to a walkman. It'll be nice to hike around with the camera in standby, and then drop the sticks, hit standby on and instantly roll. If this is where things are headed I'm very excited. Oh yea, and pre-record...thank you!

I was staying up late with foolish hopes. Two weeks is a long time to stay up. Off to sleep. PS - ya'll still know what a walkman is right?

I Guess Santa Red saw that we have all been good redusers! We are all getting presents!

How much do we owe you for this upgrade? :)

I never understood whats so hard about the RED menus... The first time I picked up an epic I was able to get around all the menus instantly. Anyway super psyched about this build you guys have been killing it as of late!

- thumbnail playback overviews would be really usefull!
- fast switching between display modes without all the strange artifacts and a 2 second wait. Please also make the option to not cycle between 3 but just between two options, clean and menu.
- no artifacts and wait for image magnify. Possibilty to zoom in further than 1:1, and to move it around the frame.
- faster boot time would be nice, never can be fast enough :)
- keep up the good work :)

I agree. I never felt confused by the menu system and have always thought it was very easy to use.

for still shooting in 8 or 12fps playback/project framerate lower than 24fps would be really nice or a skip from frame to frame via redmote wheel:)
