Hi, I've been craving for a prerecord mode... I need it badly. However, however happy it has finally been enabled, I'm still hesitating about venturing into shooting before build 4 is a release version. Has anyone in my field taken the leap already ? Feedback much appreciated...

Not sure about wildlife. But we just finished a week long short on 4.0.8. The only bug worth mention was that the LCD froze whenever we were sending color bars to the ref. monitor.

Hi Denis, you should try it. I find it is much more stable then the prerecord mode on the Red One. With the Red One it happened to me some times that it freezes the camera (restart). Never had this issue with Beta build with the Scarlet since its out. If you could live with the random inconvenience of the prerecord mode with RedOne M or MX you will love the new prerecord for its improvement.

I just spent 3 hours yesterday shooting eagles with pre-record on. worked great. I wasn't on 4.0.8 though, it was 4.0.6. 8 was freezing up my camera when shooting high frame rates for some reason.

I think you can use it out in the field already, since its benefits and usefulness out ways any “instability”. I was just out filming for 3 weeks in tough conditions with lots of moisture and heat (raining in the tropics). I had some issues with 4.06 so I gave 4.08 a try mid project. I figured I could just roll back to 4.06 or even 3.xx… I like the smaller steps you can choose the pre-record in now. It’s just more media friendly in the field when you only can dump at night.

I would not; don't think it's ready for commercial situations yet. I had horrible problems (OFFLINE FILES), lost several files in 2 days of shooting, went back to train 3 (15) and had no problems whatsoever in 4 straight days. RED is still investigating. Proper media and power down procedures were followed.
Just my 2 cents.

thanks all for the valuable input... I have had issues with the prerecord mode using my red one, , and I could live with it. I think I'll try build 4.0.8 shortly on minor subjects.

Yep. Shot these yesterday (wild Howler monkeys Epic @ 5K Nikon 70-300mm). Just under 2TB's shot and no problems at all so far.

I just shot 6 days on 4.0.8 and its been one of the most stable builds I've ever used. I was only shooting 23.98 with not a lot of playback, but other than one time I had to restart because something went funky while changing a lens (screen turns everything blue like smurf mode) it was surprisingly rock solid.

It has been behaving well for me. I however, am not using prerecord function though. Lots of good things in this build. The TC flags are back up so hyperdeck shuttle is running well. The monitor is back to normal when switching between playback and record modes.

Nice framing Rob, lovely shot. Can't believe the details if i open that still at 100% in Photoshop! :) Very nice!
Thanks Richard. I'm on hotel wifi and we have a very poor upload rate. I posted a screenshot of the original exported full resolution TIF (from REDCINE-X). I'll link the full file after we're home. Hopefully post some of the video in short order as well.
