  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 21...

aspect ratio from 4.5K in the relased build also in 2k an 3k and 4K

aspect ratio from 4.5K in the relased build also in 2k an 3k and 4K

Hi Stuart,

Robert here,

Because of slomo's, is in the nearby relaese of build 21 the aspect ratio 2.33:1 from 4.5K in the relased build, wil there also be a 2.33:1 in 2k an 3k and 4K?

I shoot a lot now in 2.40:1 , but we have to wipe in the post the 2:1.
And i don't want to give other people then myself the change to change my original framing.
So i will love to shoot in the aspect of 4,5 K in every resolutiion and keep it in 2.33:1

thanks Robert

1080P Playback Bugs?

1080P Playback Bugs?

Odd thing. Used the new build on a shoot yesterday. During playback the image on the LCD was always pushed in and cropped to the center - almost as if it was in 1:1 mode.
Never happened before. Anything I may be missing?

Just installed the release version of Build 21. First "problem" I came upon was that 1080P playback when shooting in the new 4.5k format doesn't work. The playback image only fills about 1/3 of the LCD or the Panasonic 1760 17" monitor I have hooked up to the camera. It does it with Redcode 42 and 36. The playback image on the monitor is real time, while the playback image on the LCD is playing back at approx. 10-12FPS.
Everything is happy at 720P playback. Other 4k formats playback fine also in 1080P. It just seems to not like 4.5k.
I am doing all this testing with a Red 16GB CF card.
Any thoughts?

4.5K Playback

4.5K Playback

Its a fair comment for 4.5K. Recommend you leave playback at 720p while we look at that.

There are several build 21 threads- which one should I use to report a bug / issue I found?

how about adding some faster camera speeds to 4k like 60 or 120 fps!:puke:

That's called "Buy an Epic". The internal bus speeds in the R1, as in any computer, have limits. I would suggest the R1 is running as fast as they can currently make it. Of course, being Red, never say never...

I shot the latest Chris Brown video "Crawl" on build 21 in 4K ANA. I'm very happy with the results and the performance of Build 21 and have since used it on every Red job.

You can check out "Crawl" on this YouTube link..

Haven't had any issues with Build 21 and I'm still using it, even though it's been pulled for the time being. Only wish I could do 4K 16x9 in Redcode 42... I've had to use 4K HD in those instances. I'll take a few less pixels in favor of less compression.

Cheers!

My only real complaint I have is that the rolling shutter on the photo strobes in shot... As far as I know, there is no way to avoid that with the current design of the sensor.

Nice video Chris... I do see your strobe issues. Definitely a rolling shutter issue that you wouldn't see with a global shutter... and this issue is usually called "partial exposure".
Unfortunately, I don't think any digital camera would have captured that scene well because a CCD camera would have smear from the back-light. And you're right, I don't think any CMOS camera's exist with a global shutter because of technical/logistical issues (probably not a sensor design issue though).

Did you try ramping the frame rates up at all? I think the slow-motion effect might have been appropriate for the scene and may have eliminated the rolling shutter read issues you were having. Maybe best to try and test this theory though before relying on it for a shoot. Only other solution I could think of would be trying to "add" the strobing light effect in post... but the risk is that this could look very cheesy.

Either way, it was a great video and the average person will not likely notice the strobe issues because it looks okay and the flashes of light sort of follow the beat of the music.

mmmkay, couldn't find a bug thread so I guess I'll post here. At my camera house we like to have the camera's set a certain way, so part of my job is when they come in is to reset them to those settings. Part of this is resetting the "look", "user" and "system" settings....I noticed awhile back that just because you reset those the view mode of the camera (REDspace, 709, RAW) doesn't change. Well I noticed today that the top View mode indicator does change when resetting the "look" (going from vmRAW to vmRSP), but under the video>view menu it is still under RAW.....not sure if this is knowen of...I know it's not a huge deal....but I thought I would mention something about it.:arf:
