  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 21...

Did you shoot in 4.5k? R3ds 4.5K are not yet supported, transcode them to prores 4.

Agreed, we did Prores4444 (great new codec that some in LA are using for final delivery, assuming you are not working for FILM OUT?)

Its a killer new codec and maintains a ton of color space and latitude for grading in post. Unless you need film out, then its a whole different story

yes indeed 4.5K. Thank you.

I have found that if you output Prores4444 quicktimes from Raw R3D's in After Effects and then bring those Prores4444 quicktime clips into FCP there is a major gamma shit. Shift does not happen with Prores (HQ) with 444 checked.

... I have important shoot monday... Shot two days ago with b21 2.2... no problems... dilemma.... should I should'nt I...

Dont know why but It feels different in 4.5k... much more filmlike... its kindda wierd...

Build 21

Well guess that you have 4 days to verify that Build 21 works for you... is there any reason NOT to?

I'm trying to download BETA Build 21 (v21.3.1). Am I doing something silly, or is the link wrong on the web site?

Try that again Jamison...

Odd thing. Used the new build on a shoot yesterday. During playback the image on the LCD was always pushed in and cropped to the center - almost as if it was in 1:1 mode.
Never happened before. Anything I may be missing?

Right hand button on top of LCD adjusts the camera's LCD output scaling .. could be that...

here is a jpeg still of 4.5k just to show the aspect ratio.

If anyone gets a chance to do a semi-serious shoot with build 21, please let us know. I have a short planning to frame in 2.35 coming up next weekend. Love to know if the beta can hold up, although I know it's a risk.

I did a spot on Build 21 Beta last week in 4.5K 23.98 RC42 and it worked fine. I think you just have to consider your post workflow as certain apps don't know what to do with or can't handle 4.5K. If you're transcoding to QT and eventually DPX or QT for grading you're fine since REDALERT and REDRUSHES work with it.

I've just updated our camera with B21. Looks wicked! Native 1:2,35 is so much easier to edit in comparrison to croping down 2:1. Is there any word on when 4,5K RedCode 42 will be supported by Color? This is the main reason why I can't use the setting at the moment.

/Erik

I wouldn't hold your breath on this. The new color science has been out for awhile and Color hasn't been updated to use it. Unfortunately, some companies that support RED files aren't as aggressive in their updates as RED themselves.
