  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 20 (Beta) bug tracker

So I've been on Build 17 for a little while now. Playback has crashed with audio on a couple of jobs (both times with cheap mics and no sound person - with a professional sound person and gear, I've never had a problem). But it was more than a playback problem, certain takes did not even record completely or properly. Two questions here:

1. Have the playback issues (solid green screen with default message), been only playback issues (not effecting the clip itself) for you guys?

2. and, Does build 20 seem to be an improvement over build 17 in this regard, the same, or worse?

Thanks in advance,

Jim McKinney

I'm not getting any audio through headphones suddenly. Worked fine beginning of day, now not so much.

This also effects the audio output at the monitor output, in Build 18.
As was pointed out, toggling audio on/off corrects this. Doesn't seem
to have a pattern as to what causes it to switch off.
Has Build 20 corrected this?

Have no idea if these are B20 problems (just recieved my R1 #6371) but here it goes:

1. Impossible to get any picture on my new Dell 24" computer monitor via HDMI, unless using short and expensive HDMI cable – AND powering the camera from AC! Powered from battery (fully charged 3rd party 130 Wh) = no picture! (No Red EVF or LCD attached to the camera.)

2. Can't get audio channel no 3 and 4 working with phantom powered mic! Channel 1 and 2 works fine.

Best!

Some bugs in build 20

Some bugs in build 20

Hi, I work without a problem with build 17, now I upgrade to 20, and the headphone monitor is dead, and some times the VIEW RAW option is trouble, the camera only displays raw, and I can´t to make adjustaments in ISO and White Balance !. So I have to clear de User profile to solve it !
I will reinstall build 20.

The audio issue is something that came in with B18. Sometimes you have to toggle on/off both the channel record button and phantom power if using it each time you replace the battery to get Audio or sound through the headphones.

I also noticed an issue with doing playback and upon return to the camera mode, having the view space change usually to redspace if you were on Rec 709 and sometimes to some other setting that is about two to three stops over what you were viewing before doing playback which couldn't be fixed by changing view gamma (Rec 709, Redspace), only by going into playback again or power cycling the camera will the image be displayed normally (values correlate to meter readings). This little bug can be dangerous on a partly cloudy day. This bug is not the same as the bump in gamma that happens during playback. When the clip is not actually playing, the image is shown as normal.

Now that I've loaded build 20, my camera doesn't see the RED Drive. It will see the CF card but not the drive. I try to format the RED Drive and it says media too slow. I have 2 drives, both with the same result.

Just my 2 cents, but I shot a commercial last week on BLD 20 Quad HD for three days and not a glitch no problems playing back clips at all. I do wish the on camera audio recording had more options in manageability though. Of course this is not a BLD specific issue.

Hmmmm, I think that B20 is not very happy build. Full of bugs.

..and the worse one of them all is the swedish-pussy-bug when adjusting back focus.

=)

I have done 3 big jobs with B20, and no major problem during shoot. Just some occasional reboot during playback, but this can be avoided by just pressing the buttons at a slower rate.

I'm very happy with this upgrade. The camera is truly taken to a new dimension of quality. I feel the REDONE really have made a new chapter in the story of film making. Thank you! :)

Hey programmers, what are you doing? Oh - it's beta :-)

What build were you on before?

I keep looking for these darned bugs but can't find any "new" ones... Perhaps I need a bigger flashlight...

Best build to date (obviously) and I have yet to read/see/hear/experience any new bugs that I hadn't already experienced with B17 & B18...

Not a build 20 bug per se, more something that has been bugging me:

I find the handling of audio in the GUI a bit discombobulating. One has to enable the phantom power under a different menu than the one used to set the level. Would be great if all could be accessed under one menu, which should probably under "system". Also, maybe Tracks, Type and Phantom could all be placed as one menu:

I.e. System>Audio:
>Enable Tracks (Off, On-line, On-Mic, On-48v; all selectable with the wheel)
>Levels
>Headphones

(Actually, would be great if some 3rd party could make a little USB gadget, that would let us control audio settings; 4 knobs would do.).

(And as noted by others: please re-enable that the phantom power remains during power cycles. Diminished already 2 otherwise fantastic shots.)

And it would be great to have a quicker, less intrusive option for formatting new CF-cards. If they are empty (i.e. the DIT transferred them, double checked everything, and lastly deleted all files), they should auto-format, without disturbing the display. Alternatively, please at least remove the full-screen note that the magazine is formatted. Think of those of us who work in cold climate and would prefer to keep the gloves on as often as possible :)
I would also still like an option to delete - at least - the last take. There should of course be a warning just as it is now when trying to format a magazine that contains R3D files.

I am 100% on with this!!! I've never liked to have more then one menu for audio. pain in the butt

Yep, push the playback buttons slower and you will not get audio codec and the like errors.....Stuart...this has been around for a while....looking at it?

I went on a RED test with a new client today, upgraded to Build 20, so far not problems. The client reviewed clips (playback) all day on camera, not an issue. We were shooting to 16GB CF cards. Only problem was the LCD monitor, which was not related to the upgraded build.

Red1 #6371 on build 20:

No zebra function in ISO range 100–200. Fully open iris, still no zebra. At ISO 250 and up, zebra is back.

But the camera i sooo cool, dispite runaway zebras!

No zebra function in ISO range 100–200. Fully open iris, still no zebra. At ISO 250 and up, zebra is back.

ISO 100-200 is underexposing so far that the sensor is clipping before the LUT will get to 95IRE.

Short answer is that if you need to underexpose, use NDs.

But I like the lower ISO range for the lower noise. Thought it would be nice to have zebra in that range too, otherwise it's a bit useless i think. And the manual doesn't say anything about ISO 100–200 beeing similar to underexposing!?

RED?
