  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BUILD 17 Beta

I know I see people reporting boot hangs occasionally. I've had them too, just not with the B16 release firmware. I don't know if there is a specific identifiable cause -- seems to be different reports of what "fixes" the issue for those experiencing the hangs. IMO, most of those reporting that re-connecting certain cables, indicates to me that it could be more related to cable and connector problems than the camera itself. But I don't know, looking through the various reports I can find on here in the help section (and there really are not that many), it's hard to point a finger at any specific cause.

Have you tried contacting RED directly on this matter?

Knock on wood, I've never had a boot hang. Must have gotten a good one.
Cheers,
Harry

I thought it was a cable issue too, but I had bought a spare LCD cable, so I tried with this second one, and the intermittent boot issue was still there. So maybe not a cable issue after all...
It surely isn't an easy problem to fix, as you just explained. I would just like to hear Red's opinion on this issue.

No, I haven't tried contacting Red directly (yet), since I thought it was a firmware related issue, and I was still hoping it would get fixed in the next release. If it doesn't get fixed I'll contact them. I'll have to send my camera back to Red anyway in a few months for the audio board upgrade...

Yep...

I think i see an increase in image quality...unless i have hallucinations.

It's even more beautifull.

Thanks a lot!

Antoine

Miltos,

I really thought i saw a difference, i saw more finesse.

...but i then realized i had removed the UV filters in front of the lenses and put Ultra clear filters instead...:)

That was the reason.

Can we stop talking about boot hangs in here already. There are various different threads talking about the same thing. This isn't a new issue. I'd like to hear about experiences with build 17 and future build options.

So Stuart, when I get the pins put in on my red and I have my 18-50mm on I will be able to see focal length, Iris, and Focus if i want in my viewfinder or LCD? Where will it show up and how can I turn it on and off?

Yes you will see T stop, Zoom (% in this release) and Distance (Feet in this release)

Those will change to mm and Feet / Meters in a later release.

The location is in the upper look around area, so visible in RED-EVF, RED-LCD and HD-SDI outputs, but you must enable that display - to do so go to PREFERENCES / DISPLAY and check the LENS DATA box. The setting will be remembered over power cycles.

Thanks Stu. Now I just need to get my camera in for ipin and audio board upgrades.

Max mode is the default. B16 increased the quality and stability but as a result also decreased the framerates for Scratch a bit. Unchecking it lets it do an older mode that worked well for Scratch at half res high.

FYI, 3840x2160 is exactly 4x 1920x1080. So half res proxies are exactly 1920x1080. It's good for commercials and episodic/broadcast work .

Hey,

not only is 3840x2160y exactly 2*2 = 4x 1920x1080y BUT you should recognize that
3840x2160y is also exactly 3*3 = 9x 1280x720y
which makes it very efficient for the 720p live preview :)

Deanan, maybe there should be (beside 1/4) a native 1/9 proxy mode too, therefor...

The other way around:

A native 3840x2160y pixel display is the BEST option for future HD viewing...

Cheers,
Axel

This is listed as one of the fixes in build 17, so it seems like a good place to talk about it.

With respect, no it isn't... Its probably not a firmware issue and therefore its not addressed in Build 17.

There is a separate thread on this issue - lets continue any discussions about this there.

The answer remains the same. Use just one of RED-EVF or RED-LCD and you will get exactly what you are looking for on the HDMI and HD-SDI outputs.

But the camera can't do that if the graphics engine is being used to support a RED-EVF plus a RED-LCD.

Stuart, I'll bring this up just one more time because I believe you understand how important it is. Would it be possible to enable a mode that switches the graphics engine to the HD-SDI (Like it does when only the one EVF/LCD is plugged in) but have that exact same image play out to the Red LCD as well? No difference, just duplicated (No meters or anything else) on the LCD or EVF (preferably assignable)
but I'll take whichever is easier.

If this is truly not possible, ever, I may be forced to buy a TV Logic 7" LCD instead of the Red 7" for onboard use. It is just becoming too much of a problem not having that data available to production.

Sorry Evin, the RED-ONE can't feed GUI graphics to three different output types at the same time.

Pick any two, but as soon as its three, the PVW HD-SDI / HDMI output has to revert to video & look around only.

Yes, but...

That's just the thing, we can't pick any two !

What Evin, and I, and certainly many others, would like : is to do just that, pick any two, EVF + HD-SDI and leave the LCD be clean, or LCD + HD-SDI and leave the EVF be clean (probably the best solution as most DPs like to have a clean view), but why is it when there are three outputs plugged in, it is necessarily the HD-SDI which is clean ?

Cheers,
Damien

Can this be addressed with Epic at least?
