  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Budget RAID Solution?

Eh…the words "budget" and "RAID" should never be used together. You're only asking for trouble by trying to find the cheapest way to do this. Get either a dedicated SAS RAID controller from ATTO or Areca and a multibay SAS tower or if on Mac and have Thunderbolt go with a Pegasus or Thunderbolt array from Areca.

The Pegasus2 24B routinely sells for about $3500 these days:

Be aware that you have to back up, so be prepared to buy two more sets of 24TB drives in order to back up the array in at least two different places.

The other way to work is to simply pare the footage down to a manageable amount so that you don't necessarily need all 24TB of material online at the same time. It's very possible to get just the circled takes from a large project well below 10TB, and working with that much material is fairly easy and affordable these days... though it still doesn't eliminate the need for backups.

I vote for the pegasus x8 tb2 raid it's works well and is really nice and it sold in high numbers, to me that's a very valid point when buying these kind of things.

We just had a group buy you missed out on but the Akitio Thunder 2 quad is a good thunderbolt raid solution

+20tb of footage would be a hard thing to fit in there and speed would only max out with SSD's, no?

Think x8 HDD TB2 is the best fitting solution / bang for buck when around 20tb of material. But then yes he needs a computer with tb2 port to make it max out the raid in terms of speed.

I use one my self on a 8 core trashcan and it works really well. I bought it with 8x4tb drives as I do not really need more space on that raid then that and i rather keep the cost down so I can order one more just the same and stripe them as one raid and get 2x TB2.0 read write speeds for playback and renders. Thats faster than my dual Stone&wire fiber 16x raid that cost me about 10 times as much a few years back... think of that, it's insane to see how fast the cookie of computers speed/cost crumble :)

well how many bays do you want? 8TB sea gates are a little slow, but cheap...so 4 of them in a OWC thunder bay is 32TB raid 0 or like 24TB raid 5 (or so) if you can settle for 5900rpm instead of 7200 or w/e. even using faster 4/5/6tb you can maybe scrape by on a 4-6bay unit depending if your willing to segment or not...im using areca right now, they are fine. I managed to crash one and needed to wipe it with disc utility, but no problems since and I got everything off it. It was running ex fat, not sure if that was related, I usually do not run ex fat, just randomly hung up with a kernel failure and went to read only mode and insisted I dupe off it. Not the best way to start out my first project on one, but everything was fine when moved and no drives ever failed, just some random fluke.

personally i am hard pressed to need anything more than a thunder bay or maybe even a mini almost would do it for me, but not quite i am afraid... i figure any drive i can get is better then what production usually tries to make me use haha...always raid 1s and then things take longer at wrap despite my in advance warnings, or raid zeros which scare me a lot. i'd probably get by fine with a 12TB i bet OWC unit or Pegasus. I figure it would make everyone feel safer to have a spare copy, production can still buy their drives but I want a fast one to run my rocket x through so I think it would help for that. Though to be honest shot-put pro has optimized my workflow on set so much lately with its fast sloppy copies that I can totally scrape by without a raid 5, its more of a what if copy, faster copy, and a way to keep a DP happy by saving them a copy kind of an idea for me to get it I think.. So for those reasons alone i'll probably pick one up i am thinking, and storage is so cheap now I can get a massive one with 4 bays, its kind of crazy...hope the floods never come back, hard drives are finally cheap as heck again!
