Kris, while you are correct that there will eventually be no differences between the M and X [dimensionally speaking], RED has announced that there will be a redesign to the top of the camera body with the X's release. Ms will be returned to RED to be updated to the new design over time. Since RED has not shown us what the new Epic body looks like, we can only speculate at this point. We will not know for certain until RED reveals the new design.

Hmm...I guess it would be wise to hold off on ordering the top plate eh?

If I was in the market for any accessories right now for an Epic I would hold off until after RED has made the Epic-X body public. That's a week from now so it's no real loss. RED has announced that their own accessories will fit but 3rd party ones may or may not. Better safe than sorry... definitely worth a few day's wait.

I ordered a FMJ this past week...would appreciate putting it on hold until the X is defined.

Thanks,

Good on you, Brook. I see other 3rd party accessory makers (who I'm sure know about the design change) continue to push their products without any mention that the part may not work with the new design.

Your best bet will be to contact Viewfactor directly.

It's what I'd want a company to do for me. I'm hoping it works out in a positive way when we see the new design. If not, we already have a plan to transition if modifications are necessary. We have actually already fielded several minor design changes off list to keep the plates functional with Epic-Ms as their design has changed in very subtle ways. It sounds like this change is the first [and last] major one. I'm quite excited to see what RED has changed!

We'll know soon!

Hey Brook, do you know if the FMJ will work with ELEMENT TECHNICAS Hybrid Plate with the 19mm setup?
If not, what will?
I need to order something ASAP!

Thanks!

I'd like to know whether the Full Metal Jacket Bottom Plate allows one to use standard ARRI baseplates (I'm thinking 15mm studio offset) on the Epic...their website mentions "Red One hybrid base plates including the older original base plates." but doesn't specifically mention if they're compatible with other plates...

The hybrid plate from ET is about 0.1" thinner than the Arri standard so using the FMJ bottom on an Arri bridge plate would probably result in all of your accessories being 0.1" higher than the lens centerline. Most accessories have some flexibility built in so you may be able to get away with it...

Can someone with a production Epic-X and a VF/BW FMJ Top Plate confirm or deny that the Epic-X's new top design still marries well with the current FMJ plate?

Thank you. :smile5:

Something tells me OffHollywood already knows.

Yup! Also, wondering if there will be a new bottom plate that works with the RED quick release system. That's what's holding me back. Is that still in the works? Any timeframe for release? Expecting my email soon from Red and I'd love to place an order ;)

Anyone want to buy a Epic-M FMJ top plate with my company's logo on it?

Order accessories late ... screwed.
Order accessories early ... screwed.

:thumbup1:

I certainly didn't mean that you or Curt were screwing anyone. You have been more than upfront and the product is exceptional.

The top plate is great, Brook. I wouldn't be surprised if it was your plate that inspired the changes in the first place.

It's just been frustrating to try to order things early (like SSD media) and end up paying a lot more ... or in this case buying the wrong piece. Obviously, the alternative is to wait on everything. That has proved to be a really bad idea in the past.

One thing to consider ... Even the FMJ top plates that fit on the Epic-M now might not fit when they get sent back to Red for its retrofitting.

Best of luck with everything. When the Epic-X model comes out, I will be first in line. :001_smile:
