  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is the infrared modified EPIC technically an EPIC Monochrome? Or were these shot with the Bayer CFA in place?

Hey thanks for sharing the trailer Jarred - and thanks for all the feedback from everyone :)

I'll post some tech notes when I get a chance for anyone interested. But in the meantime just a couple of quick things ...

Most of the footage on 'brindabellas' was shot on a modified Epic-X. This mod was done by RED - the regular OLPF was replaced by one without the IR cut filtration - so everything came in! Then we filtered the lenses to keep out the boring light the eye can actually see ;) We used a range of IR filters on the lenses (mostly Nikkors) - but probably 95% of it was just plain old R72s (720nm).

The actual film is just on 150 minutes long in total - so we've broken it up into 5 parts to get it out there. The first part 'summer' is up on Vimeo now - the next four parts will come out over the next few months. We are looking at options to get it out in some kind of mega uncompressed deluxe version - but for now it's on Vimeo and we'll add some 4K clips to Youtube as we go. We are currently starting the next IR project - which will be shot on Dragon with IR OLPF - if we can get out hands on a Monochrome IR option we'll shoot something with that as well!

Quick outline of the 'brindabellas' project:

'brindabellas' is the new infrared art/doco film from silver dory productions. It features the sky and landscapes of the Canberra region of Australia - in particular the Brindabella Ranges - captured in monochromatic (near) infrared.

Following a theatrical preview in 2014 (NFSA 4K Arc Cinema) the complete 'brindabellas' film is now being released online in five parts - 'summer', 'autumn', 'winter', 'spring' and 'summer (returns)'. Part one - 'summer' - is available now to rent or buy at vimeo.com/ondemand/brindabellassummer .

This feature-length film (150 minutes over five parts) focuses on the interplay of mountain light, air and water as these elements are transformed across the seasons from clouds to mist, rain and snow - then frost and ice – and onto creeks and rivers. It explores both the wider montane vistas of the region and more intimate details of the natural flows that are created by these mountains and, in turn, shape the very landscapes they arise from.

'brindabellas' evolved out of the short motion piece 'karst country' (2013) which was developed to explore the possibilities of creating infrared motion with RED Digital Cinema cameras. Field-work for 'brindabellas' commenced in June 2013 with the specific aim of creating a feature-length film entirely from this infrared footage - which uniquely captures the intricacies of sky and cloudscapes, the dynamics of rain and running water, and the shifting shadows across the changing seasons.
