  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Brainstorming how to shoot 4K 120fps as wide as possible on Epic-W

I have a specific need to shoot extremely wide (15mm or less on a full frame) on the Epic-W at high FPS (90-120fps) in 5K or 4K. As you know the sensor gets cropped as Red doesn't offer any other option to line skip or average pixels together for quality purposes.

Does anyone have any ideas for 3rd party lens mounts or adapters that might let me put a C-Mount lens (or similar) on the Epic-W and get the lens closer to the sensor creating a smaller image circle? Is there any type of C-Mount to PL mount adapter or any other combination?

Alternatively, does anyone know any extremely wide lenses that don't have too much distortion near the center? The widest fisheye I can find is about 5-8mm. After its cropped to 4K it will be about 12-20mm. Some fisheye lenses might not be too bad once they're cropped. It's mostly for shooting in the ocean inside waves so the distortion in the corners won't be too noticeable.

Also on the rectilinear side of things the widest I see available is 11-12mm. Any suggestions in that realm?

The Zeiss Ultra16 6mm T1.3 lens would cover a Super 16-sized area of the sensor. Extremely low distortion, and very clean and sharp wide open. And PL mount. It sounds like the ideal lens for your application (other than the insurance costs for shooting in the ocean!).

Then there's the older 8mm Peleng which I think covers Academy 35. You can probably find one refitted to PL pretty cheap. Century Optics made a cheap-ish 6mm Super 16 lens, not sure what the history of that lens is. There are a bunch of vintage ultrawide lenses out there for PL mount if you search around.

The Sigma rectilinear 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM AFC is worth a look. I'm an underwater shooter and I've been using it on the Epic-W to shoot wide angle at 5K-6K. Not that fast but I'm generally up around f5.6 anyway for wide angle.
