  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another obvious one ...

since the sensor block/lens portion of the camera ("brain") is now separate from the IO & recording portion of the camera - it would be just fantastic to have modules that are merely "plates" that turn the proprietary connection between brain and the other modules into a SNAKE of cable(s) - so the brain could be mounted away from rest of the camera for crazy, extreme stuff ...

IMO this was the only point the SI-2K camera made - you can seperate the camera head up to 100 meters from the recording device via a single cable.

I think RED Rope sounds catchy for cabling but it's not as...macho. But yeah, a RED Head camera tethered via fiber optics would be snazzy for particular applications, especially underwater video filming. As far as a DSMC goes, it would be great to have a bunch of them mounted on tripods and then computer controlled for shooting.

thoughts on Red Spinal Cord

yeah, I like that name Mark!

1.) Signal attenuation - the Red Bus (another new name? Where have we heard that before?) probably wasn't built to go meters, so it might make more sense, if you want to remote it, to translate it to a fibre cable of some sort, like fibre channel cards do - translate to something that can run long distances, convert it back at the far end...

2.) YES, this could have all kids of awesome applications, but would require different design implications to do so.

I was thinking the same thing... (and yes, SI was on top of this long ago, but indeed a good idea.)

How bout this one too:

Make certain modules, such as the I/O module and Battery module, symmetrical and perfectly balanced (and add a second connection between modules), so that it can be turned upside down if you prefer your cables or batteries mounted from the other side.

I would think that DATA THROUGHPORT is the key factor in this request.

If the cable length does not affect the things then I am guessing this might be possible.

Cheers Mark!

I could imagine a scenario where the brain (which is pretty small comparatively) stays attached to the lens but all the other bits (I/O module, battery module, and Redmote (which can be wireless anyway) could all be attached via extension cables - is that what you're talking about?

Everything old is new again!

Before Sony effectively monopolized the camera market by eliminating their docking BetaCam decks, it was easy to greatly reduce the camera size by separating the sensor & recorder with a cable. I've still got all the parts stilling idle in the storage room.

Seems like an obvious addition for the new Red cameras, a boon for shooting in tight places such as car interiors.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I got it! Make a mini module that clips onto the bare brain and converts the inter-module interface to (n) fiber cables. Use the corresponding minimodule on the other side... That'd be really cool.

Hmmm... except Power doesn't work through fiber and I think storage/sata isn't included in the inter-module interface, you either use the CF recorder or the Red Drive Sata Lemo port, don't you?

The could call it the "RED SPINE" or "RED SPINAL CORD"

This would be cool with Five Accessories that are fitted for the modules. One for the Back. One for the Left. One for the Right Side. One for the Bottom. Another for the Top of the Brain. They would bend into a certain position you would want. There would be Five Spacers for the Scarlets to work with them.

Imagine a camera that can grow outwards on the Back, Left, Right, Top, and Bottom. Plus they and go in any direction after that, like Dr.Octopus in Spider Man 2 or the Tripods Machines in the War of the Worlds. The camera can hold its self without a tripod or even walk/roll with motorize accessories! Haha :)

An absolutely huge plus for the new Epic/Scarlet modular design with a snake cable is the ability to low mount the camera. Tilted at a 45° angle, it's impossible to put the camera low without digging a hole or using a giant prism.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Yes, a very good idea, so also second Mark's suggestion. Already a cable of 1-1.5m would make all the difference.

When you said brain snake I was thinking of something like the matrix shots where they lined all the cameras up in a circle or some other pattern and took single frames from various sensors.

A long cable to a lens and sensor is a great idea, for tethered hand held, small cranes, even inexpensive stability options. The little guy can make use of the steady cam he already has. Even home grown remote options would be cool.

Mark,

I don't want to provoke anybody here especially at RED HQs but this idea is pretty old and already was implemented in a certain

way at SI-2K design as Douglas Underdahl mentioned before above in this tread.

That's exactly why SI-2K was chosen to shoot "Slumdog Millionaire" a film that the Britain press trying to push in Oscar race now.

And not because of that SI-2K has better DR than RED1 as it was mentioned in American Cinematographer at the article "Rags to Riches" by Stephanie Agry, page 81, December 2008.

Also interesting thing is that the same cinematographer, Anthony Dod Mantle BSC, DFF, after that chose RED1 to shoot his next project that is Lars von Trier's "Antichrist".

Btw, at the picture above I was playing this SI-2K modular part in April 2008 and by curiosity all that was shot on my RED1.

Have a look at this short 2K footage:

all understood - I'm just saying - the same concept can be applied (I believe) here to the DSMC system -

I'm investing in a modular system Sanjin - so ... I want every possible module I can think of that offers something useful and productive.

and for the record ... I did start my post with

"Another obvious one ..."
