"Bomb" EVF naming

Rockin'! :emote_happyhappy:

I travel a lot with my gear and have come across some pretty darn stupid security in my days. Don't assume that they're schooled! What so ever! Most of them are just foot soldiers with no higher IQ then 50. So why tempt them?

Tell me about it!!!

The worst seem to be at JFK, LGW and LHR.

Staffed by morons!

The thread is most certainly not stupid. I guarantee you some REDuser somewhere is going to be delayed at the very least due to questioning, because they are trying to pass through airport security with the word BOMB on a piece of their equipment.
The concern is as simple as that really.

If people are really concerned going through airport security, can I suggest black gaffa tape over the word "bomb" ???

Seems like a fairly simple solution.
Amazed no one has suggested it so far...

Edit: OK, looks like 2 people beat me to it! :-)

I could pick up this Wacom and join this exquisite Photoshop fun, just as I did before...but that's too easy.

Here's some other fun stuff instead, which however cannot be used to cause laughter in the classroom:

1.Perceptive immunity effect

This effect happens in multiple types of brain activity. It it caused by longer exposure to the same input, when that input becomes less noticeable or totally unnoticeable.

It is present with all human senses: taste gradually weakens when longer eating a same meal - which is why gourmet way of eating consists of many different small meals; colour perception ability weakens which is why a colorist cannot work accurately full day without large pauses; repetitive noise stops being perceived - all because brain starts to get immune and ignores that input...This effect happens biologically and psychologically also. It can be seen and experienced in everyday things.

Through psychology, the effect is also present sociologically, which is why we are not so shocked any more seeing violence and death in media because it has become even a part of everyday entertainment. This didn’t happen over night.

2. Gradual adoption

If someone made a film in 1930’s with a scene of human head getting splattered with a baseball bat, people would vomit in the cinema and have nightmares. In 1985. people would be disturbed.

In 2009. people laughed.

This level was reached through steps, one at a time. Each one perceived alone did not seem like a major one or even remotely important. Each step was just a “slight” step up. It seemed justified enough because at the time it did no one harm while collecting viewers and filling the cash register.

Many people in the present still fail to see the significance in the latest step.

3. Social numbness

Based on the immunity effect and gradual adoption society has become numb to numerous serious and increasing problems, regional, national or global, all simply taken as a normal part of everyday life because they are seen more and more. If earlier society was aware of that future chain of events it would try to prevent it. Current society is not capable of changing the present, and while being more technologically developed and having larger knowledge base makes the same mistake for the future chain of events by seeing only each individual step, again seeing no harm in that step alone, while not seeing the causality it creates.

4. RED influence

RED company is having more and more influence on professional multimedia production market, both in manufacturer and customer space. RED is cool. RED is different. As soon as RED started to get noticed and recognized through it’s products and unique style and proved it works, many companies started to copy RED’s approach, even some business moves and marketing, some went as far as even using similar visual identity. Soon Scarlets will hit the streets.

What starts as a cool creative fun in the highly influential company's premises, outside is subject to distortion and multiplication by numerous external factors.

5. “Unpleasantness”

Natural and healthy feeling of unpleasantness, discomfort is caused by a “negative” input and the purpose of that feeling is to change the cause of a negative input or avoid it. Pain of a scratched knee after falling of a bike makes a kid better aware of balance limitations when riding a bike. Seeing someone getting hit by a car makes a person more careful in traffic. These are naturally unpleasant feelings which are unpleasant for a reason. Nature's simplified way of letting human consciousness see "this is not good", because the consciousness is by capacity incapable of crunching every data about every step of causality around it, hence the simplified human responses. They activate complex subconscious mental and biological systems to overcome an obstacle or deal with a problem or a threat.

Shocking terms are shocking for a reason.
Nature's way of letting you know "this is really bad, avoid that". Through years entertainment industry and media have been miss-using the primary and natural purpose of shocking effect to gather viewer's attention - and by that more profit, with a consequence of social numbness to shock causing input. The consequence of which is insufficient interest in the present to change the cause of shocking input - because there is no reason to change something that doesn't bother you any more.

Using terms which describe unpleasant things, more importantly horrible things, for purposes other than describing horrible things, the effect of unpleasantness and discomfort which the term originally caused is getting reduced. Reducing the effect of “unpleasantness” of an input leads to acceptance of an input, because brain accepts what is not unpleasant.

Then it becomes normal.

“just a name”...

Kudos for the deep jokes. Also feel free to join the Photoshop fun. You forgot the "Little cuddly creature" and "Hello Kitty". ;)

I don't really agree with this. Although I'm absolutely fine with killing people in very violent video games, or violence in movies, I find that I'm easily nauseated and shocked by real violence in, say, news footage or documentaries, and I have no reason to believe it would be different in real-life.

In my experience, at least, I think that being accustomed to seeing fictional violence has little effect to how we react to real violence... And in my opinion, having something named 'Bomb' EVF really has just as little effect on my attitude towards real explosive devices as using the phrase '___ is the bomb!' or watching road-runner cartoons...

Hervoje, your argument sounds like a great premise for a documentary.

Save #4. RED is a 3 year old company... are you really trying to correlate clever marketing with sociology that has evolved over decades? Centuries, Milennia?

Thats a really weak argument... as the cameras are called.

1. RED ONE
2. EPIC
3. SCARLET

and they are powered by BRAINS.

That is the marketing impact of RED on me.

FYI- "The BOMB SQUAD" was based on an the INITIALS.... B.S. for some of the BULL SHIT the have to deal with. I found that clever and funny, not offensive, and I refuse to believe its because of sociological "conditioning".

I dont watch SAW or GORE movies, they offend and disgust me. I was at ground zero days after 9/11 and smelled the rotting flesh first hand. My son was nearly killed by BOMBS in IRAQ.

I feel absolutely ZERO correlation to the BOMB EVF. sometimes its healing to make light of things that have had deep emotional impact.

I respect your opinion, but respectuflly disagree with your conclusions

Here is the singles greatest tenant for a happier existent.

1. DONT TAKE THINGS PERSONALLY

Mods, I truly think this thread should be closed. its ALL NOISE...
including my own

To be clear, I am NOT correlating RED with the other points and negative factors.

I was mentioning the most important factors related to this subject, with one of those being RED's current and future influence, I was NOT putting RED in the same basket. Important distinction to be kept in mind.

1. DONT TAKE THINGS PERSONALLY

I cannot stress enough that this has nothing to do with personal preference. BOMB EVF has been announced for quite a while. Never had any problems with that. That EVF by itself is not a problem. Trend that might be created with other folks and the chain of events following are.

We have to ask ourselves some questions:

How would RED affect this in a bad way? The percentage of people who knows RED is quite small.

And... Is the word BOMB really that shocking? I guess it takes a lot of free association to get to that.

I grew up playing Mortal Kombat, breaking bones and ripping spinal cords, however I can't stand looking at gore images and the internet is sick of people who think it's fun to have/post these kind of images.

Urban violence is something you have to grown accostumed to because ultimately there's nothing you can do, specially in my country. So yes... I feel indifferent when the drug traffic shoots a whole neighborhood and kills dozens of innocents, but I'm not sure I'd feel indifferent watching with my own eyes.

All valid points Hrvoje, it doesn't make a classroom laugh, but makes it think no doubt.

I still feel that we're taking the "bomb" expression and turning it into another direction.

I would suppose it got named BOMB EVF because the earlier version designs looked like an old WW2 bomb. Now i don't know if its been discussed in this thread or not, but the idea that you would somehow be detained by airport security for having an item named BOMB EVF is absurd and shows a new level of paranoia I feel unfortunate to be witness too. Obviously everyone is entitled to freely express their opinion on the matter, but come on... aren't there more important things to discuss than what RED decides to name their products?

Does anyone here lives near an airport?

Why don't you try an interview with some head of the security there, bring your RED along, some lights and makes a small interview asking the guy about this subject.

That would be helpful.

There's a suggestion that makes some actual sense. Everyone should know by now you don't even joke about anything related to anything bad in an airport or on a plane.

I personally could care less about a name. The day I miss a flight because of a name is the day I'll start to care though.

What do you mean?
I'm not an US resident and I have no idea how things turned out after 9/11.

Since I have no actual experience sounds a bit far-fetched that the name BOMB written on a small electronic device should cause problems.

Yeah, well - go to a U.S. airport with bomb written on something and tell us how it all works out. Or an Israeli airport.

Did you see Mike McEntire's post:

"Ha ha Milan. I got one even better then that. I had a friend with homemade Makita battery power for an Arri S on a trip back from shooting snowboarding in South America. It kind of looked like a bomb like all taped up with wires coming out. He thought it would be funny to write "bomb" on it in sharpie. At security in Chile they found the "joke" bomb. They took his bag with his camera, lenses, all his shot film from the trip and the Makita battery with the word bomb on it and blew all of it up. He lost all his gear and his film from the trip. He never put the word bomb on any of his gear again.

Pretty sketchy stuff for sure with a word like that on your gear especially in this day and age."

I don't think a lot of these "airport security types" have great senses of humor really. So, I'd have to agree with the poster that said the only logical thing to do would be talk to some security people at major airports and get opinions. Hopefully it is no big deal.

The problem is I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not.

Internet sucks for that...

Because you say it would be a problem but you say it's logical... I have serious suspicions that you're being sarcastic. :)

I wonder if the Pope would allow a Dirt Devil to be used on his carpets?

My wife went to a Catholic University (DePaul U. in Chicago). Their mascot? "Blue Demons". I guess those Catholics can sometimes have a sense of humor.

Oh and lets not forget that a large mass atomic bomb is often referred to as "Peacemaker".

I guess context can't be ignored.

How would RED affect this in a bad way? The percentage of people who knows RED is quite small.

By accidentally creating a fertile ground for other people getting careless. Please re-read my point # 4. in the post #64.

And... Is the word BOMB really that shocking? I guess it takes a lot of free association to get to that.

It's not shocking. Please re-read the example in point #2.

I grew up playing Mortal Kombat, breaking bones and ripping spinal cords, however I can't stand looking at gore images and the internet is sick of people who think it's fun to have/post these kind of images.

People who think that is fun did not reach that level over night, or were born having fun with gore images.

I still feel that we're taking the "bomb" expression and turning it into another direction.

Maybe we shouldn't turn words like "bomb" into another direction, not because of airport issues, which seem weird, or because it might bother anyone - not likely IMO,
but because someone else might find it cool to turn another, slightly more powerful term into another direction, and the next one...and the next one.

Why that outcome is "not exactly good" is referred to in the point #5.

As an Nth disclaimer...to keep the emotions steady...RED's general style and marketing is unique and great, IMO. Goes well with the products. Subtle camo-styling looks cool and is not exaggerated or unsuitable IMO. I liked it from the day one.

What may be is that this single little creative naming thingy may present a borderline factor enabling other multiple external factors to make that little thingy into something much larger and unwanted with a life of it's own.

If it's that unimportant and silly (motivating a bunch of jokes ridiculing the sillyness of the issue) logical thing might be to cut the potential problem in the root, rather then gambling and allowing the possibility of the problem emerging at some point in time, especially if that potential problem goes far beyond any personal preference and affects society in general.

Because you say it would be a problem but you say it's logical... I have serious suspicions that you're being sarcastic. :)

Ok, English isn't your first language. :-)

No sarcasm.

That story about the person who lost all his film and camera gear to airport security in South America because he had written "bomb" on a small electronic device is apparently true. Hard to believe perhaps, but true.

In light of that, and the fact that Airport security is overly sensitive worldwide - I think it's pretty wise to ask the opinion of Airport Security personnel. I would if I was at RED. It's probably a few phone calls. No big deal.

In American slang, something that is really well built can be called "bomber", as in bomb proof, or indestructible.

Nonetheless, TSA (Transportation Security Authority) personell are not well paid. It is a blue-collar job that does not attract particularly intelligent people. They can be very petty and bureaucratic, and are notable for not having a sense of humor.

It's pretty ridiculous that anyone would take an industrially inscribed "bomb" label seriously, but weirder things have happened.

Looking at it now...I go bak and forth between Singapore and the UK and Dubai. I know SG and Dubai would listen to reason but the UK would go skits with the word bomb on something...couple weeks ago we had a big issue with the police and well to say the least...they'll shoot before they let u say ur end of the story let alone finish it!

I'm all for it but certain airport security profesionals take their bad days out on anyone they can because they can...
