"blur" is my EPIC-M experimental short film to test the camera's capability at night, to test the flares at night with mixed color temperatures, and to test how the lenses performed wide open at T2.8 at night

I used one of my EPIC-M cameras and my Cooke iPanchro T2.8 prime lenses. It was all shot at 5K 2.40:1 between at 320-500 ASA, 48-60fps, and 5:1-6:1 compression ratio.

Shot on on location on Granville St in downtown Vancouver featuring actress Beatrice King (http://beatriceking.com/)

Enjoy!

Hi Norm,

Great job.. Love those lenses.. The bokeh is gorgeous!

I think what I really love is the way the red neon holds up to the dark side of Beatrice's face.. Really shows the latitude..

What was your shutter?

The shutter was at 180 the whole time. Couldn't afford anymore stop after 48fps and T2.8 at 320-500 asa :)

Love the iPanchros.

The only thing is, I'm not sure if I rendered this video properly for optimized VIMEO quality. It seems softer and murkler on VIMEO after I uploaded it. I uploaded a 1280x540 Quicktime H264 file.

Haven't watched the vid yet, but had a quick question; being that MX is rated at 800iso, would it not have made sense to capture/monitor at 800iso? Or did you set it lower, in order to expose with a little more room in the shadows (in the opposite way that you'd shoot at 800iso in the daytime to protect highs)?

Also, I'm gonna be in Vancouver this month. If I've got some free time and you're Epic isn't out on a job, would it be possible to check it out?

EDIT: Just watched; pretty awesome. As for vimeo, it re-encodes to whatever it wants... it doesn't use the same file that you upload (hence the degradation in quality.) That said, it still looks gorgeous.

Very nice demonstration piece.

If this kind of image can be captured at 500-800 ISO why do people obsess over extreme high ISO speeds? Was it necessary to push this footage beyond 800 in RCX to get the final results?
Most of the current gen large sensor video cams from the AF100 to the F3 and Alexa can natively capture clean images in this speed range. Why do some feel compelled to push extreme ISO speeds for this kind of low light conditions?
Norm, how does Epic compare with other cameras you have shot in this speed range for general exposure results?

This is gorgeous norm, thanks for posting. Probably helps those who are afraid of being able to use the Panchros at night as well. Amazing bokeh!
