  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi all...

Thanks to new RED owners Jon Firestone and Chris Bagley, a number of folks had the chance to do some tests, examine, and get to play with RED #232 this Monday.

Hosted by Mark Grove, the event was attended by Jeff Deel, Dave Main, Jason Coviello, Crystal Burback and myself. A very pretty set of Zeiss superspeeds was provided by Dave Pizio of Optics Unlimited.

With Jon and Chris’ permission, we’ll be releasing some raw .R3D footage and the results of the days testing over the next week. We shot blue and green screen plates, some general action footage, and did a couple tests of the rolling shutter under various conditions.

First up are four blue and green screen foregrounds, shot under both tungsten and daylight balanced light sources. I haven’t had time to experiment or study the clips yet, but was keen to get this footage out to those who might be interested. Special thanks to Crystal Burback, who not only served as our test subject, but already knew the RED’s menu structure far better than we did…

One thing... please note that the blue channels in the footage shot in daylight light is less grainy than when shot under tungsten light... this is the main reason we did the test, and I'll be posting more on that in another thread...

These are short 4-6 second clips and are hosted by Chris Lyon and his RED Relay service. In addition, dpx files from each of the four clips are there...

No it won't key nicely. It will key AWESOMELY. There is a bit of toggling to be done clipping the blacks in the bottom right corner, but it cleans up quite nicely.
 
Wow thanks for all the info- we're building out our chroma screen studio and this will help a bunch as we decide on lighting!
 
just a silly question, when you say "will key" does that mean you have keyed it or that you will?

I have huge problems getting a nice key even on just the nose, nice clean edge but hey no, I'm keying in shake using all tools but I still get the feeling you would get if trying to key an image that has been graded using secondary color tools... hard black line right at the edge...

What am I doing wrong? :(

don't get me wrong, the setup and the exposure are AWSOME but what about the colors in the files?
