  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Black sun

sunspots

sunspots

i've got some shots we took last week that clearly show the black sun problem on an earlier build camera, running v.9 firmware if it would be of any help - just to illustrate what the problem was/is - let me know if this would be useful, or just confusing.

How would the red handle a situation like that?

Cheers,

Nick Gardner

Ah... that's ok then.

I was affraid teeth and eyes would turn pick
Imagine tracking/masking individual eyemovements + teeth in an outdoor restaurant scene.

this sure was revealing. I can breath again.

Petty with the skin on them beach shots, but that's an easy fix after all!

Thanks Gavin!!!

Keep in mind that this was a very thorough simulation it was still only a SIMULATION and I want to make sure nobody thinks that's actual RED footage. There are some very minor things I didn't quite get right. For instance I think you're unfortunately right Gunleik the Hoff's teeth are such a magnificent pearly white (so white I hear are used by several scientific organizations as a metric measurement for the color white) that I imagine they would clip as well.

I apologize for my oversights.

not the correct answer

If you do not have clips set and don't iris for the scene this will happen.
If you try this same shot with a Digital camera using RAW you will get the same outcome...Give it a try.

This could be totally unrelated, but I had a weird problem that replicated the pinkish hue on that clipping segment when looking at my Canon 40D's RAW files in a graphics viewer called XnView:

XnView_Canon40D_RAW_problem_s.jpg

This was when the 40D was new and XnView hadn't yet built in support for the newer CR2 format of that camera. The RAW files were fine, it was just XnView's display of them that was messed up.

The image macgregor posted just before reminded me of that RAW pinkish hue, so I am wondering if the fix for this sensor clipping colour shift isn't one of a simple code syntax error, such as a leading zero or some such bit altering the clipping colour value in RedCode RAW to pink instead of its supposed white colour? In the screen capture you can also faintly see a line of scrambled pixels at the top of each image. I figured that showed an error in decoding the Canon RAW images in XnView and posted the error on the programmer's forum. It was fixed two builds later.

Anyway, just throwing this out there in case it helps; I might be totally off base but you never know....

Oh and I second the idea of adding a clipping alpha channel for RedCine to receive as data - great stuff flameop!

Hi All,

we just finished some footage and put it online, see this thread:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=139186#post139186
I'll invite you all to have a look and give us some comments there...

We had no apparent issues with the rolling shutter skew as far as I can tell. And be aware: We had in camera explosions, people flying around quick and close.

Further, we had super strong torches and other lights pointing in light fog towards the camera and never ever witnessed an sun protection light effect.

The results are amazing and way closer to 35mm film scan than to an Sony HD-CAM (to nail it down).

Thanks to the RED team for making the camera working this good.

Cheers,
Axel

Axel... thanks for the vote of confidence. The footage is amazing.

Hey All,

just to let you know:

We had another shooting day and some people brought an HD CAM to compare it with the RED.

I was told the result of 4K footage vs. the HD CAM footage was pretty much "destroying" the idea of using an HD CAM for the recording of a bunch of blue box keys...

Regards,
Axel

We shot out a window with the sun shining directly in (almost the entire frame turned white) and saw a little purple- but no black. I'm FTPing the footage now and will post a link. We have not seen the black dots to date.

you will or you did ??? :waaa:

Bassam,

we did, but I was not there in person, so it was the feedback from my collegues that I am pointing out here.

At first the other guys thought "well look pretty good, but not really much better than HD CAM". Well, and then they zoomed in from HD full (down rez)view into 4K 1:1 pixel zoom view, end of story :)
