Black MAgic hits Hard with FREE Version of Resolve + version 8.0 goodies

Having not used Resolve yet does anyone know if the demo video HERE is showing Resolve 8?

This appears to be the new version of Resolve. I noticed the different UI today and inquired. It will not be available as a free upgrade for present users until June according to the guy demoing DaVinci. This adds several advantages to the version I've been working with since January. I love this program. It is rock solid and powerful even without the upgrade. As I understand it the new version will also include stabilization. If it works as well as their ability to track secondaries it will be extraordinary. I am heading back to BM tomorrow for a closer look. The light version will give many a free taste but the full version is worth every penny.

It's not so much secondaries that are tracked per se; it's power windows that are tracked. You can contain the secondaries within a window, and those can track very, very well. I've used the built-in tracking on Lustre, Baselight, and Resolve, and it's far better on Resolve in my experience.

The same tracking techniques can be used to stabilize images in Resolve 8.0. The demo they had at the booth was shot off a boat on the ocean, and the tracking almost completely eliminated the wave motion, keeping the shot very, very stable. They did acknowledge that this is not going to work well in real-time on a Mac, and it's really more of a high-end feature for the bigger Linux systems. But once you render it, it works fine even on a Mac.

Dunno if this was mentioned earlier, but I was told the free Resolve ("Resolve Light") is scheduled for July 2011 and is limited to two nodes. Given how much power you can put in those two nodes, this is a pretty significant deal, provided you have an extremely fast Mac, very good i/o, and a fast GPU.

My current project is on Resolve, and I'm very impressed with it so far. I gotta say, the daVinci Control Surface is one of the best I've ever used -- extremely ergonomic and well worth the money. Tons better than the old daVinci 2K console that cost more than three times as much.

With multilayered support it can be now done very easily by using something like this:
http://cinegrain.com/

i was wondering about that too...

but is cinegrain a company that can be trusted ...i heard is very expensive (but no price on teh website ) ...they were supposed to be at the NAB but their boot was empty (the guy from the buoth next to them said that they never showed Up ...)

anyone tested it?

There were used to be prices listed, but I don't see them anymore. I seem yo remember, HD something like $350 and 2k priced over $1k, but I'm not too sure. Just call them...

I purchased Cinegrain for a project I have on at the moment but I see that I'll be using it on a regular basis just like I use my now 10 year old library of grain I made myself.

Cinegrain is a great library and if you get the ProRes 4.4.4 the cost is very good.
I've just been doing the conversion to DPX Log myself & have outstanding results.

They are cool guys at Cinegrain and have been very helpful to me.

Every colorist / VFX person needs a great grain library in their toolset.

thanks rory

so you think that the prores version is Ok ?
i quite don;t get why the uncompressed version cost wayyyy more ... i mean prores should be visually compression free and we don;t have to color correct the grain layer right ?...

thanks
g

Yeah ProRes is visual lossless and I don't see anything wrong with converting the ProRes 4.4.4 to uncompressed. Works great for me.
Besides you are overlaying the layer of grain with a Logic Op and its a dirt layer so getting precious over anything greater than ProRes 4.4.4 as the base is a bit silly.
I alter te colour to my liking so yes doing a colour correction on the grain layer works really well.
