We will announce more about the PL mount sometime next week, once we've done a little more testing, send one out to Jarred, etc... the first PL mount is going out to Jay Kelley for his all-things-RED dvd due out shortly:

Jay has been a good friend to Birger these past years. His videos have been the "go to" for information on the lens mount system, and wireless follow focus. To repay the favor he is getting the first PL mount, which he will be reviewing on the DVD. Some might question my motives for giving the first mount, and such a shameless plug for Jay. Actually, he is blackmailing me... seriously... I owe him an apology for all of those "he's-got-a-face-for-radio" cracks...

I've been along for the ride with Jay as he has been pulling this project together. I love the way he is using some of the extra DVD features to allow the viewer a real "choose your own adventure" path through the information. See something interesting, want to know more about it? Push the info button, jump to the in depth segment. Return to the same place in the overview. I think this is going to be the model for how-to and informational DVDs to come.

As I understand it, sort of. It's not a twist and remove sort of thing.. It takes a tool and 5 min... But you no longer need to remove then entire Birger Assembly to go to PL.

It makes switching to a PL mount no longer a big deal..

Excellent!

I am very hopeful that RED will get Eric some measurements or some sort of engineer type specs of the front of Epic once they are locked down so that the Birger Mount can be readied for Epic and Scarlet.

Erik, is this the interchangeable mount?

I believe tt goes on over the adjuster (the part that screws into the red) so you just remove the front piece (the part with the EOS mount).

Interesting - but you'll still need to re-collimate the mount, or has Erik come up with some clever way to avoid this, or going to be using incredibly fine machining tolerances?

Hopefully all other front pieces replace and just collimation remains. You're right though, the tolerances would have to be right on. I do think that was part of Erik's original intent when he designed the system.

You can imagine this is how the Nikon mount would work as well. Hopefully i/data will make it through all the mounts.

with the birger adjustable collimation ring one can mark a different indicator for canon and PL - then turn the assembly to use your respective collimation mark

fantastic news eric !!

Sounds very cool. Another way to keep my Birger/Impero and when budget allows, go to PL!

And thank you to Jay for the great B/I How-To. Sold me on the setup for sure.

And as for the face for Radio.... I did some voice work for Metro Traffic, and the VP, John Accello told me something similar...

"You have a face for radio, unfortunately you don't have the voice."

Sneak Peak

Just remove the Canon lens mount, bolt on the PL base, dial in the collimation setting, tighten the screws, and thread on the PL retaining collar. Good to go... collimation dial, and readout are accessible with the PL mount fully assembled. Mount in the picture was printed at the office. Shop will finish cutting the prototype run on Monday.

Tolerances will require a re-collimation the first time. Keep good notes, and the next time will be rather quick. This is meant to be quick and inexpensive - a solution for nine of ten users of our system. No i/data. All about easing the transition.

Don't forget... the most unique lens reports submitted by a single person wins one of these. Would somebody be good enough to dig up a link to that post?

Looks great Erik.

One question - does the PL retaining collar have stops or is it free-spinning on a threaded core?

Unfortunately with only 5 lenses in my collection I won't be winning that mount....

Cheers,

Paul

Just to note to all, Erik & I exchanged some technical specs so that the NULL Lens will fit onto the Birger PL mount with no clearance issues. Since the collimation ring will apparently be accessible, this make using the NULL Lens a straightforward proposition on this mount.

Has the PL Mount option released yet?

No - Eric should have a few prototypes done soon for beta testing and will then require approval from red in order not to void the warranty, although this is more of a formality because the PL mount is a dumb mount that uses the existing birger "inner" mount and does not affect camera electronics or mechanics. My best guess is its still 3-4 weeks away.
