  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big Change...

And no, Redcine is still very buggy on the PC side.

Come on, Red guys, stop announcing, start delivering... at least the PC softs...

Get a MAC dude. Or wait patiently, you are lucky they are working on PC SUPPORT AT ALL. You should be thanking your lucky stars they even care about PC users like you, I sure dont!

Hold up...

Hold up...

OK, I think its time we put Red's business practices aside -- this is capitalism, live with it.

But more importantly:
When can we expect this announcement? Any Idea what time of day? Any hints at what this might be?

That's the lamest answer ever dude. If everyone thought this way about anything we would have very little competition and innovation. There is no reason why RED should care more about MACs or PC for that matter and support for both should be on par. We have both MACs and PCs at our studio and I can tell you they both have their shortcomings...... You should be thanking your lucky stars we have PCs and other machines out there because without it, your MAC would be even more overpriced and it would have less features than you have now....

Having said that, I think RED is working really hard on their workflow for both platforms. It's only a matter of time now.... Workflow is always the biggest price to pay for being on the bleeding edge of technology.... (it happened with 24P, P2 and other formats...)

these days it feels like Red is just a marketing company. need to get ONE running stable before they pull devs off on new projects. come on dudes, build 17 is awful! how long ago was the ONE introduced? give me a break. go read this and stop drinking the coolaid http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/freshdv/story/red_renders_previous_koolaid_vouchers_obsolete/

Just feel lucky you even get to hear about R&D at all. If RED were silent about any development, I doubt there'd be half as many people ready to buy a camera that hadn't shipped yet. Most would just think, "that'd be the perfect thing for my project, shame there aren't any lower priced models." Creative professionals wouldn't give it another thought.

Think about it. $17,500 camera. Great, but without the hope for other people of lower priced models, would anybody be interested. Confirming that there will be cheaper models keeps a lot of companies interested. What RED are doing is bringing the customer right into the development process, and it's a concept that other companies could learn a lot from.

On a side note, Jim, is it Red, RED or red, or does it matter?

The only thing different about Red (besides the determination to bring outrageously cutting edge products to the market) is the transparency of the development process. Do you really think other companies don't change their minds behind closed doors? Apple junked several phone designs before it settled on the iPhone. Can you imagine the outrage if they made announcements along the way, only to change directions.

All companies do the same without letting us know what they're doing it. It's the nature of the process. I am glad Red has let the customers get involved in the process. It gives us an opportunity to scream "no!" or "yes!" and influence the final product for the better. I understand the constantly changing nature of development. The transparency is a good thing.

It seems a lot of folks are getting rather upset about changes and announcements.

I would like to offer a different perspective.

I head up an R&D company that develops very advanced 3d imaging software and hardware solutions. In any successful R&D effort you always have to think ahead and pass the ball to where someone is going to be not where they are right now. R&D and product development always has a SIGNIFICANT degree of uncertainty. This is because the more cutting edge work you are doing the more uncertain things become, especially in terms of final configurations, specs deliver dates and so on. This is because the things that are being worked on are NEW and have never been created before. Even if you are SONY you still cannot operate in vacuum, you are dependant on other technologies that are being developed all the time that you have no direct control over. Therefore to remain competitive (especially for a smallish firm) you engineer your company to be extremely agile enabling the ability to make extreme changes even up until the last minute. The fact that RED is able to make extreme changes at the last minute is a PLUS not a negative thing as all of the changes are for the BETTER not the worse. Many companies set out on a R&D and product development course and often by the time they are able to reach market they find that their product is over priced and underperforms; I.e. for some companies once they set off in particular direction they are unable to make significant course corrections in short order (like trying to steer a battleship around).

I like the early renderings and the announcements because it tells me what RED is thinking. This is vital so that the 3rd party software and hardware products that we develop can include and take advantage of new products that RED will release. I think people really undervalue the utility of the future product information that Jim releases.

From a design perspective, ball park sensor size, price points (they are getting cheaper), form factor (they are getting smaller), weight (they getting much lighter) etc. ABSOLUTELY INVALUABLE. If we only had the RED ONE’s capabilities, price, form factors to go on our current designs would be very different. We literally have thousands of designs with different configurations of equipment for different types of imaging systems. Using CAD and CAM allows us to change almost everything up until the last minute, but is always a change for better and we try to make sure our software can handle greater data rates etc. Whatever RED finally brings out we will have designs that can take advantage of the new technology (in advance) that we can implement in short order. We feel privileged to have such information. The fact that everyone else has the same information is terrific, a very open and level playing field. As someone that develops new technologies I feel that Jim acts in a very courageous and generous way. No non disclosure agreements and secret meetings required, (Makes the competition seem like weenies!)

I also REALLY APPRECIATE the ANNOUNCEMNTS of announcements, so it means I have the latest information without having to stay glued to REDUSER that way I can actually get some work done!

JIM don’t change a thing, (apart from your specs and delivery dates), we love what you do and the way do it! [Congats on making the RED ONE available, (massive achievement)

Jim, i think you need to get over to scarletuser and get them thinking straight.... they are all over the place

You faithful Messenger...

This "pro video coalition" article is such bullshit. This guy is such a douche.

I'm sorry to flame and curse on this board, but FUCK this. It's really fucking upsetting to read crap like that. If any dates slip its for a damned good reason, I highly doubt because someone at Red is slipping up, or dreaming up new specs. Also, including these "slipped/pushed back" dates, I am completely blown the fuck away at how quickly Red produced the Red one from concept to shipping to my front door. BLOWN AWAY. People that whine like this article make me grow a big rubbery one

I havn't read the article your mentioning yet so I have no idea what you are talking about.... but I just love posts like this that just OOZE passion... You can feel just how angry Zak is and get a clear picture of him slamming the key's typing his response... I love it.

I know, I know, something must be wrong with me :)

a big rubbery what?

there's nothing wrong with PC's per se...it's windows that blows goats...unless apple just fails across the board in some way, i'll never go back to windows. EVER.

Getting $500-700 a wedding is something I never would have imagined!
You realize that you are being exploited if they only pay you that kind of money, right?
Unless you're only doing a shoot, no editing whatsoever that's a rediculously low price.

At least the weddings I've filmed when I was the grand old age of 18 started at 7.00 in the AM and lasted until 1.00 in the following AM. That's an 18 hour workday, just to get the footage. Capturing and editing added at least two or three days, so now you're working almost five days for $700? Only when you're 15.
