  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big Change...

Great news! More to look forward to.
I'm betting Jim just found a way to put a sensor ... under our eyelids. Open your eyes and you start recording to a flash drive in your .... shoe. Go for it!

Frankly, I think it's awesome that Jim & Co. keep thinking big.

More than any other company, I am beyond happy to let (watch) Red keep tinkering and improving until the day cameras ship. Let's face it, we already know the bare minimum that we're getting. I cannot recall any time that RED promised a spec and it was overwritten by a new product with a lesser spec.

IMO, how can we be upset? Sure it's overwhelming, no doubt, but to think it shows a lack of confidence is backwards. From any other company, I agree, I'd be worried, but from RED I think it almost shows a boastful overage of confidence.

A little Red Ego? Yes, please.

Jim, it is quite exciting that you guys are willing to throw out what you've done and make something better, rather than just continuing along as planned and doing the cool thing later. And the pre-release info gives us time to save our pennies! The last time I was as excited about digital imaging as I was when I read the last announcement was when I first shot with a Canon D30 7ish years ago. I look forward to seeing what you guys announce in a couple weeks!

No. I'm just finding it impossible to plan for purchases this way.

The alternative is for Jim to wait until these products have gone through several maturation processes internally and then release the information to the public when they have close to an expected ship date. So, in this case I would think the earliest you would have found out about Scarlet and Epic is NAB 2009. You would then have just a couple of months to prepare. At least now, you have ballpark specs, ballpark prices, etc. To me, it allows you to start the planning process. Yeah, it could change, and change drastically but you have something to work with. Otherwise, you'd be shut out from this whole part of the process.

All it's like a kind of metamorphosis:

"Metamorphosis is a biological process by which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching, involving a conspicuous and relatively abrupt change in the animal's form or structure through cell growth and differentiation. Some insects, amphibians, molluscs, crustaceans, Cnidarians, echinoderms and tunicates undergo metamorphosis, which is usually (but not always) accompanied by a change of habitat or behaviour."

I'm doing just fine touching, caressing, and smelling my red one right now...

Honestly... It's kinda like Jim gave us all Supermodels for Christmas, and then on New Years Eve he starts talking about these new "Brazilian" Supermodels he just discovered, and people got frustrated 'cus they wished they'd waited for the Brazilians.

:innocent:

Hah, so Olsen your saying I should go to brazil before I settle down?

Stoked to hear it Jim, you guys are moving at the speed of technology and I can't wait to see what that speed brings us!

I just saw the comment made by Stephen Pruitt about being consistent, and I though it was very ignorant. If there is one thing I hate about the big companies and/or politicians, it is that they stick to their phoney talking points, and never admit mistakes or change their ideas in light of new information. I hail RED for its dedication to continuous improvement, and its push to add every bit of value to its products before they release.

This big change is awesome, just what was needed to assuage the many not satisfied by the 13th, and we would never have gotten that from Canon or Sony.

I agree..

I got tired of it after the first post, a long time ago.

Tom Hogan (Nikon book author) also chimes in.

Edit : Askey never gave Red a mention in the 'latest news' section.

No... smiling here. Just surprised that one of our customers would really want us to start acting grown up. :-)

Jim

Please don't ever start acting "grown up," It is the child who would say "The emperor has no clothes," and that is what we love about you folks. You call it like it is, and make it work. And every time you have done this you have exceeded my expectations to the nth degree. Keep being the rebels you are and we will gladly be your rebel soldiers ;)

waiting patiently

Whatever you do in life there are going to be criticisms and praises. So either you do nothing and pass through life like you never existed or you do something great and let the sensors fall where they may.

then wait...just a guess
i regret that i didnt order earlier

Don't misunderstand—I plan to buy at least one of these as soon as they come out.
When the specs were announced on Nov. 13 I took some time to plan our acquisition sequence/which configuration would be right for us. That now appears to have been completely wasted effort. If every two weeks the news is going to be Total Change, Again... then announcements stop being useful on a practical level.

This is either an incredibly flexable company with a totally new way of thinking and risk taking or a fantastic marketing plan...or both.

Wow, so I haven't seen anything that implies this announcement would change the Epic or Scarlet. In fact previously for the Nov. 13th announcement they told us it would change the Epic and Scarlet and haven't said that regrading this one.

My guess is the announcement is regarding RedRay, workflow, RedCode, or something we haven't even seen yet. Most likely it is for the Soccer Mom's and it's probably iMovie integration.

Then look at the thread Breakthroughs... in the Recon.

That'd be pretty funny if everything just changed back to the way it was at NAB 08. Just a silly thought :) But seriously, I know these guys at RED are very dedicated and they are doing things so differently that I think we all need to give them time and space to discover whatever they are going to discover. I for one can't complain at all!!! How can anyone complain when RED is IMPROVING their already stellar lineup here!?! The only thing I can imagine that cause a negative stir is price increases / or delayed ship dates after this new round of changes, but I'm sure that Jim and Co. have a strong road-map for the future and they just want to perfect it before spilling ALL the beans. Sorry if that rambled on a bit. :)
