  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Beta Camera Build 3.2.8

The best way to look at this issue...remember the old mustangs same bodies but one GT -V8 , V6 and v4 people tried to drop the GT engine in the V4's and it wouldn't work do to changes and cost. They said by the time you pay all of that money trying to put that engine in a V4 you could have bought a GT.

Long story short..you have to educate us on how it can't work because we thought it would work taking the Epic boards and placing them in a scarlet..until I spoke to Red support. Yes we want you to modify the scarlet with all the perks without burning the camera out or.......give us some spec's on the upgrade for the scarlet =)

When I purchased the Scarlet I fully understood that the upgrade would be $38,000 to buy an Epic. Maybe I could sell the Scarlet for a few thousand to soften the blow; but not really.

Anyway I'm really happy with what I have and what I can do with it - In fact It's already paid for itself many times over, so an Epic is in the cards as a second (or 1st) cam anyway.

If you want a camera that performs like an Epic, they are for sale in the store under "Epic". If you want a camera that cost roughly 1/4 of the Epic that does a hell of a lot for the $$, look under "Scarlet". They are both one hell of a deal.

I think most of the scarlet user wish they could at least get 5k or 5k WS or 4.5 k, 24fps with rc 12:1 or even 18:1 ; it s not the spec of the epic at all but it s only the capacity and the fact of using the full sensor , not only a part of it wich is kind of frustrating -

You know what's frustrating? Paying 16K for a C300 and having it be out of date in 6 months. You know what else is frustrating? Whiny little b__ches like you who feel entitled to a $35K Camera for 10K. I'll tell you what - none of us are entitled to that. If you feel that entitled, maybe your parents should have been more strict with you.

Also frustrating is some of these new Scarlet users on Reduser. (I said SOME) These have the strong smell of hobbiests without the faintest clue about market and business realities. Some of us here feed our families with our camera investments. We are not all just producing mopey navel-gazing "personal films" while working a day job at Starbucks.

Scarlet itself? Not frustrating.

I love my Scarlet. Perhaps I will invest in an Epic one day, but for now the Scarlet is great. If I need faster frame rates and/or 5K for a particular day then I will rent an Epic from one of the lovely Toronto-based Epic rental houses/owners. Thanks for the lovely firmware update, Red!

I was recently following the JoeAlter/Disney Patent dispute over xgen and shave+haircut. (Basically JoeAlter owns the patent on the only reasonable concept on to do cg hair/fur.)

He basically wrote this amazing software for simulating hair, but originally developed for a platform and price point that attracted a ton of hobbyists. (Lightwave at $99). He got fed up with all the whining, and was pushed over the edge by unreasonable demands. When one of the idiots finally called his house and insulted his wife, he quit the entire platform. He rewrote the code for Maya, charged a ton more for it, and was better off for divorcing those users.

Something akin to this tends to happen with red. They offer professional products at prices that open the door for aspirational users/hobbyists, some of whom seize the opportunity and very quickly become professional, and others who whine and complain and jeopardize the concept of the broad accessibility of the entire platform.

This post is crass, and deserves scorn. Show me an Epic user who doesn't want the best from their camera, and who doesn't want the most out of their investment. Why should Scarlet users be different? Doesn't sound like whining, any more than what is heard throughout reduser daily. The only whining I'm hearing is from people who bought Epics who realize their distinctly average needs may well have been suited by a cheaper camera.

Or to put it another way: "Also frustrating is those Epic owners (some of whom paid peanuts due to the upgrade program), who feel that their investment should receive special protection, by hobbling other technology so that it doesn't perform as well as it might."

ARG......

Don't we all want to just make movies? I mean Schawartzman and I thought the beta Epic was the best camera for Spiderman. But some of us in this forum want the newest... And really we should just want a great camera to make our films. I shot 35mm on my last feature, Epic on my last 3d 250 million feature and now I may shoot Sony F900R for a commercial.

Really we need to just shoot great stuff..... Use the camera as a film stock and just shoot pictures.......

Rob,
Glad to see you edited your post. It was more than a little over the top.

There's a lot of us out there who fall into different categories. I work a day job... I'm a Geek Squad agent. I need that job to pay the bills right now. Being a stills photographer up here with my particular focus being sports wasn't getting that done in this economy. Just because I work a job outside the film industry doesn't make me any less deserving of the opportunity to shoot on Red, or automatically make me any less of a legitimate filmmaker than anyone else.

That said, I have also spent the last 5+ years on this forum. I've soaked up as much information as I could, I share what knowledge I have, and I never act like I'm owed anything. After this long, I know Red really does have my interests at heart here. And I know enough that I don't go off whining.

But you have to be careful... just because there's a lot of people out there who fit a certain mold, especially as they move from DSLRs to bigger and better cameras like the F3, C300, and Scarlet, doesn't mean that all of us fall into that category and deserve to be painted with the same brush. And there is almost never a reason to resort to name calling and insults. It reflects poorly on the Reduser community and more importantly on you.

I'm not ashamed to say it. I got my Scarlet in 3 days before my 23rd birthday. Some people would say I must be young and foolish, or have rich parents, or whatever. But I've worked hard for years to put myself in a position where I could a) afford the Scarlet b) know how to use it and c) be ready when the moment came to put it into action. I'm writing this while I finish the post on my first commercial I've shot on the Scarlet. I shot it on my days off, starting to roll camera quite literally at the crack of dawn. Could I have shot it on a DSLR? Probably. It wouldn't have looked this good IMHO, or been this easy. I have resolution to punch in, high frame rates, good depth of field flexibility, incredible dynamic range, and limitless options in post. If you'd told me 5 years ago that at this point I would not only be shooting footage this good today but that I would be doing it with a camera that cost me only $11,250, I'd have thought you were insane. Yet here I am- and frankly, the only limiting factor here isn' the camera- it's Me.

And my abilities, much like Red's specs and delivery dates, are subject to change. And I'm counting on it.

One quick question? Do we have a clean HD SDI output to record to an external recorder in pro ress 422 with the release Build 3.0.7 now? @Red: Thank you very much for the great work you do!!

Tim -- Clean feed for all of the HD formats is available in the 3.2.8 beta firmware

Thanks Peter.
The camera quality can't make a bad idea good. Great ideas create compelling content. If you can't do something amazing with a Scarlet you're not likely to do it with an Epic either. Both cameras are amazing. As the old Nike spot says....Just do it

Both of you are protecting your rights, great, not really the place man instead of yelling at each other over the internet if you really think the Scarlet crowd is hard done by, call Jim or Jarred tomorrow and see what kind of response you get... No, you say that might not be a good idea... Ok. Just thought I'd throw my two cents since people seem to think 4K alone for under 10K isn't an amazing deal, and for those who say that's not the point... You're wrong, it's exactly the point, this is not a amateur camera, but you have been blessed with the capacity to own one. If you are a professional stop whining, save, pay, and get an Epic. Both cameras will open doors if you shoot well like Peter says.

PS -- Epic owners should get more attention and if I owned a Scarlet only I would be counting the days until I was invited into the club.

I was only referring to *SOME* people (I did say some) . Specifically the whiners and the clueless and the raging ingrates. If I were Jim I would ask for my camera back from them.

You on the other hand seem like a nice guy and I wish you luck with your pursuits.

Dude, any 35 K investment SHOULD be protected. This is NORMAL. Otherwise next time no one will buy the higher model, Red will have less cash coming in, and that means less invested in R&D and essentially less progress.

"Just enjoy your camera and go shoot something" is nice and all, but that does not amortize a huge investment. Other factors come into play, like competition for rentals from lesser models in specifics markets, perception, and so on. I could not show up with a Scarlet on a set. I do not play in a Scarlet market and neither do my rental clients. In my world "whatever is best right now" is always what is chosen, but it has to be a meaningful difference. 5K at video frame rates is one of those differences. Slo-mo is a specialty act that, if it were the only meaningful difference, would destroy the Epic rental market and make it financially impossible for many to be owner operators of the higher model.

It's not rocket science.

10K can be a hobby investment, 35K, no, not really, not for the vast majority of us.
