  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BeSteady FOUR Thread

Thanks for the update pro, but we need to hear about delays before the deadlines are missed, not after the fact.
The group seems to have given you a clean slate. Don't tarnish it so soon.

If one runs low, you can always hot swap them.

We need 4 chargers for the night, to charge all 4 batteries at once.

Carey, thanks for posting. Since I don't have a gimbal as yet would you mind clarifying?

What do you mean exactly? Are you suggesting the gimbal stays powered during a battery swap, or the camera stays powered because one might potentially use the side handle with a RedVolt and the gimbal goes limp while a battery swap?

Thanks

Sorry, I am still testing this... I'm hoping to power the gimbal alone with the dual batteries in the yaw tubes, and then powering the camera and accessories with the XL batteries. I don't know if this is possible yet, since there's not enough literature on this and we don't have the cabling to test.

Maks, can you weigh in on this?

The main thing I'm saying is that we will need as many chargers as we have batteries, since each charger can only charge on battery at a time. At night, we will need to be able to charge all batteries at once.

Thanks for that Carey, it makes sense.

I'm thinking we would also charge any dead batts throughout the day. However they do take a while to charge.

I'm not sure how you would literally hot swap the large battery, since there's only one DC in port.
However you can connect two small batteries at once. But do they failover? Small to small, or large to small?
We'll have to test this.

Carey,

Quoting from Page 8 of the manual:
Before you start: Remember about the thresholds of the power output on both auxiliary Power Plug and the BeSteady Four camera tray and the DC Out Socket. Both power exits are part of the same circuit and the summarized power output cannot exceed
3A when using the small BeSteady batteries
5A when using the large BeSteady battery

Recheck the questions I asked in Post # 33,
Part of Maks response from Post # 44:

Answer 1:
Auxiliary Power Plug - DC connection on right side of vertical arm, "DC OUT".
Camera tray connector - Traxxas connector type, prepared for upcoming special cable set. This one is located on right side of camera shelf with ~50 mm long cable.
Both are running on same circuit.

Answer about full rig - yes, you may use RED EPIC with Paralinx Crossbow, Arrow Plus and for example Hokus Products AXIS1, all powered from gimbal camera shelf connector. This will be close to maximum possible power output from regulator, but safe.

Wiring for both batteries is again the same. Depending on battery type gimbal will react with proper settings, as BeSteady Large is 14.8V (4S, up to 16.8V fully charged) and BeSteady Small is 11.1V (3S, up to 12.6V fully charged). Gimbal won't check load on all connectors, so user must know possible limit in case of BeSteady Small batts.

From my read of the manual and Maks response, it appears that everything is one master circuit.

Side note; I had also asked about whether monitoring had been factored in. Maks suggested on-board monitor batteries which is a good approach for after-market but if I want to use a RED touchscreen for fast changes, I'll be adding to the draw.
Could be a good plug for OH's Hot Link…

Just sayin'

First test failed: I just tried to balance the gimbal with a micro HDMI cable attached. Major fail. The cable, while micro thin, is still too stiff. I will have to go wireless from the Paralinx transmitter on camera to the receiver on the monitor on the handlebar.

More batteries to charge, more gadgets to attach...

I don't get it. I tested the gimbal with the RED five inch touchscreen on the top handle bar with the about 30 cm long touchscreen cable from RED and did not have any issues with the performance of the rig! Remember only when switching on the follow mode caused problems, all axis did stabilize fine without the follow mode.

I think it's just the way I ran the cable. I'm going wireless next. Still in the testing phase. As said, my first test failed. That's from my subjective experience. Nothing is conclusive yet.

We will need (4) chargers total for our BS4's, and not just 1. Hopefully BeSteady will accommodate this need at no extra charge.
To be fair, I don't think it is BeSteady's responsibility to provide four chargers to charge four batteries at once. If an user has chosen to charge all batteries at the same time, he/she needs to buy addtional cargers and BeSteady should offers the solutions at its own store or through its distribution networks. Also, I wouldn't mind to add some additional batteries if they are available via its resellers.

However, it would be nice if BeSteady can offer additional discounts on batteries, chargers, cables, and other accessories since they failed to supply the necessary cables in a timely manner.

Sorry if I'm missing questions. I'm trying to stay on top of everything.

Carey - I would recommend not balancing with the cable attached. I've had much better results balancing and then attaching a cable unless it's particularly heavy. Also make sure it's not going to create unwanted tension.

I'll check with Mike on the specifics but it should be possible to use 3rd party chargers for BS4 batteries. We will be also offering them as optional extras through our dealers.

Mark - You're right. It's not ideal to give updates after the fact. I'm still trying to get integrated with the process so I can better inform you guys.

Peter has updated the spreadsheet to represent the new schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15hiY55R50-GmhxAK6EUSdnILm87GtAJsnSJV2Mi_bLY/edit?usp=sharing

As I mentioned, upgrading units that were prepped for shipping with the new encoder cables has caused a delay. To make up some lost time we've upped the number of units in the next batch to help us make up for lost time. I'll be keeping in touch with Peter more frequently to relay any information about shipments as soon as I hear about them.

Today we'll be setting up a new BeSteady Forum page for RedUsers to continue discussions around the group buy. We are still hoping that we can discuss sponsorship with RU but at the moment we want to make sure there's a place where a conversation can continue. I'll post a link once it's all set up.

Honestly, Pro, it should be of the utmost importance to get the sponsorship done with RU.

I for one fell more comfortable communicating here.

Rest assured that's our priority too. We're justing waiting to hear back from Jason. In the meantime I wanted to make sure there was a platform to allow questions around the group buy to continue.

Link and details to follow...

Below is a link to a Group Buy thread on our forum. As of tomorrow we'll continue to post updates there while we wait to hear back regarding RU sponsorship.

Please register with your full name as you would with RedUser (our policy can be found here: http://www.forum.besteady.eu/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=69). Drop Mike a message at mike@besteady.eu and he will be able to add permissions to view the thread.

+1 for the reasons stated already in this thread.

Thank you,
