  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best way to convert 24fps to 29.97?

I have a good deal of 4k red footage shot at 24fps that needs to be mastered out at 29.97 for broadcast.

Back in the CS4 days I was advised to run each R3D clip through AE with 3:2: pulldown added before editing. I was also told that AE did a better job than AME.

Now, with CS5.5, I'm wondering if Ppro can handle this conversion from the timeline? Or, should I "interpret footage" on the timeline before editing?

Any advice would be gratefully accepted. This issue confuses the hell out of me.

I'm not sure the best method for conversion but I've recently been working with footage that I've been doing a lot of timeremapping with which consequently alters the frames per second and using the frameblending feature in after effects (pixel motion) has really helped smooth out any discrepancies in the frame rate.

Best to add the 3:2 pulldown at the end, after editing, therefore ensuring constant cadence on the output. You don't want to be doing speed changes etc. and effects on 3:2 pulldown footage as it just makes life painful, and you do want to keep a clean 24p master for web use.

If you have to deliver a videotape for the final, one quick and easy way is, output the files to 23.98 1080p, then have them do a straight-across conversion to 1080i. That will instantly add the 2:3 cadence for 29.97 broadcast.

All American TV networks and cable channels of which I'm aware will only accept 1080i for delivery -- some will do files, some prefer tape, some want both. You can also have the colorist render the final session as 1080 24p and a second pass in 1080i, all done in real time.

Also curious about the Premiere vs AE question..

I prefer using AE.... Premiere seems to add some funky interlacing with the 3:2 pull down while AE simply duplicates a frame.

Having repeatedly gone through this exact process myself , I heartily agree with Marc... Particularly as you will most likely have to go out to tape anyway. Keep your Master digital file at 1080P 23.98, and do a final 1080P to 1080i cross-conversion during your HDCAM master layoff... It's fast, clean, painless and perfect.
