So I just picked up the new Dell UHD display and am trying to figure out the best playback format for sending UHD content from my laptop to my monitor without skip/lag. Currently ProRes 422HQ @ 3840x2160 (24fps - Quality 100%) is struggling a bit. Anyone have another format/setting they have had success with?

Laptop is an MSI with an Intel i7, 32GB of RAM and an Nvidia 570M. Let me know!

Make sure you try different players. I playback ProRes through Windows Media Player (and several others) and I can indeed playback UHD4K ProRes 422HQ just fine.

Quicktime Player however struggles.

If all else fails H.264 at a high bitrate.

Phil, man that is odd. On my PC Windows Media Player struggles big time with ProRes422HQ while Quicktime Player does pretty well. I will keep messing with it.

Suggest you look at Scratch Play from Assimilate. Its only $5, free if you don't mind ads.

The guy who does the coding for Assimilate is a savant so it should have the lowest overhead. Its also a great place to test different formats as it can handle lots of formats.

VLC Player might be worth a shot too

+1 for VLC here. Scratch Play is an option too.

If you have access to REDRAY, then that's the ticket, but not everyone is into expensive, proprietary formats and player hardware.

Be careful with level 5.0+ AVC files. A lot of PCs dont have the hardware necessary to decode these, but they will try to decode via the GPU, causing skipped frames, and maybe dropouts.

There are players (like VLC) that will decode in software only which is why some are reporting better results there.

UHD is kind of a wild west for playback and formats still, a lot of people (software, hardware, players) are catching up.

Getting pretty good results so far with h264 5.1 CBR 50mbps Max Render Quality. But not sure the 50mbps is enough bandwidth for the UHD detail...
